NRL 2011 round 11 tips

May 19th, 2011 by Shaun · 10 Comments

The prodigal son is to return home as Timana Tahu has signed with the Knights for the next two years. It is an interesting move as Tahu has been plagued by injuries and on and off field meltdowns over the past few seasons. I think this is more of a Tinkler move rather than a St Benny decision. It make sense given that favoured son Danny Buderus is also likely to return to the Knights. Tinkler is serious about rebuilding the Knights and he understands the importance of the past to build goodwill. But with brining St Benny on board and signings like Snowden, Tinkler is looking to the future. I bet Knights' fans are feeling just a bit excited about the future. And tomorrow, Rene Maitua ends his two year ban from the NRL for testing positive to a banned substance. A redemption story in the making and one that could benefit the Eels. State of Origin may have everyone's focus but there still plenty going on. Tipping time. Raiders v Bulldogs, Friday 7:45pm, Canberra Stadium As the Canberra weather turns to the type of chill that trends brass monkeys towards incompleteness, the Raiders usually are good at home. But even with their win last weekend I'm still not convinced. Melbourne looked very much out of sorts. The Doggies are running well. No Dugan but there is a Barba who will sort the Raiders out. Tigers v Panthers, Saturday 7:30pm, Campbelltown Sports Stadium A very interesting game. The Panthers could be on the way back and the Tigers seem to be floundering a little. I've been trying to work this one out and reckon I'll be damned either way. Panthers to make it two in a row. Warriors v Rabbitohs, Sunday 12:00pm, Mt Smart Stadium The Bunnies played out of their skins last week but the injury toll they have must start to hurt. Sandow may be small in stature but he is bearing Souths on his shoulders. However this game may be too much with the Warriors starting to find their way this season. Roosters v Knights Carney on the comeback trail. The Knights facing unsettled times as Benett starts to make room in prep for 2012. But there is also the battle between Carney and Mullen, Origin outcasts. Another game that is too close to call. The home side for safety's sake. Parramatta v Sharks, Monday 7:00pm, Parramatta Stadium The Sharks have had the wood on the Eels over the past few season. However Ricky Stuart must really hate his old club by leaving Hayne with the Eels and taking Snowden and Gallen from Cronulla. I bet the Origin rejection will burn and Hayne will show what he can do to a hapless Cronulla. The Sure Thing: The Doggies The Roughy: The Knights

Your NSW SOO side?

May 15th, 2011 by Shaun · 14 Comments

If I was a NSW selector I'd be picking... Hayne, Dugan, Jennings, Idris, Uate, Soward, Mullen, Tolman, Farah, Snowden, Hindmarsh, Gallen, Lewis. Bench would be Mannah, Leahoyd-Lars, Houston, Bird. After watching last night's games, any thought of Dugan over Hayne is ridiculous. Queensland may respect Dugan but they fear Hayne. He has been the Blues best player the past four campaigns. Some have argued for Hayne on the wing but that would blunt his talents. I'd put Dugan there as I don't rate Morris at Origin level. Soward deserves a chance to prove he has what it takes. The forward pack is pretty much self explanatory. I was never much of a fan of Gallen but he has matured and really standing up without doing silly things that he used to do. Hindmarsh won't get picked but he damn well should be. You need a player than can defend plus also turn up in unexpected place to pick up a loose ball or pull off a try saving tackle. Ennis and Creagh showed their true colours by turning tail when it go willing in the middle. Both serve the clubs well but they aren't Origin standard. It it likely one or both will be picked which if is the case, shows that the Blues selectors still haven't learned lessons from past campaigns. So there are my thoughts. What is your side? Update: The side is: Josh Dugan, Brett Morris, Michael Jennings, Mark Gasnier, Akuila Uate, Jamie Soward, Mitchell Pearce, Jason King, Michael Ennis, Kade Snowden, Beau Scott, Greg Bird, Paul Gallen (c). Interchange: Ben Creagh, Trent Merrin, Tim Mannah, Dean Young.

NRL 2011 round 10 tips

May 12th, 2011 by Shaun · 14 Comments

I don't understand why Phil Gould seems to annoy so many people. He is a passionate thinker about the great game we all love and one of the few media commentators consistently worth listening too. He seems to occupy the place of a pantomime villain for some people. People react to him just because they think that is the way you are supposed to react. All part of the rich tapestry of the game though it is one of the more sillier weaves. But Penrith fans in general will not be disappointed that Gus is coming back to where it all began. It will rejuvenate the club and give them some great direction. Gus is there not to win a premiership in 2012 but to ensure that the Panthers have the platform to be one of the best and compete every season. Not unlike Kearney's plan for the Eels. And as Gould suggest in today's column, while the Panthers are the main focus there is more to it. Western Sydney is league's heartland. If the NRL has a strong West Tigers, a rising Parramatta Eels and a resurgent Penrith Panthers, the Western Sydney Giants will not stand a chance. Now for this week's ponderings. Bulldogs v Dragons, Friday 7:35pm, ANZ Stadium Ennis v Young will be the contest to watch. Ennis is being considered as the Origin hooker (I have no idea why. NSW needs players that finishes fights, not start them) while Young is considered to be a possible bolter. The Dogs have under performed for mine this season. If they can beat the Dragons it will be because they are on top of their game. Safe bet is for the Dragons. Panthers v Broncos, Friday 7:30pm, Penrith Stadium Wonder if Gus will be calling this game or will then send him to ANZ? Either way, he'll be watching closely to see how the Panthers respond. The Broncos just seem to good at the moment. I wouldn't rule out an upset but Brisbane deserve to be favourites. Storm v Raiders, Saturday 5:30pm, AAMI Stadium I watched the Raiders last week against Manly and I don't see how they are going to come close to the Storm in this game. There seems to be no structure in the side. I'm not sure even possible return of Campo in a month or so can fix the problems. Cowboys v Eels, Saturday 7:30pm, Dairy Farmers Stadium The last contest between these two teams was a thriller. But if the Eels play like they have the past few weeks, the result will be pretty much known at half time. At least Hayne is back for the Eels and if he keeps his head from other players' heads then he may be the spark. I'm tipping the Eels but the rest may want to ride with the Cowboys. Rabbitohs v West Tigers, Saturday 7:30pm, ANZ Stadium Things aren't well with the Bunnies. Injury problems aside, the reaction to Sandow's defection to the Eels was not a good sign in regards to the back room. Still I expect Sandow to remind everyone he is a Bunny for the rest of the season and will put in. But they may not be enough against the Tigers who are travelling much better. Knights v Warriors, Sunday 2:00pm, Ausgrid Stadium This will be an entertaining game. The Warriors have had their moments this season but also have not had moments as well. The Knights are travelling pretty much the same path as well. Mullen will be pushing for an Origin spot and a Knights victory will rest on his shoulders. Sharks v Roosters, Sunday 3:00pm, Toyota Park Some say that if Carney has a blinder in his return to the NRL then he'll be the NSW five eighth. Rubbish I say. Carney is on a long road back and his position within the game is precarious. A good result would be for him to get through the game and then stay off the drink until the next one. As per usual, Cronulla will try hard but their limitations means the game will get away from them. Titans v Sea Eagles, Monday 7:00pm, Skilled Stadium The Titans have plenty of experience. Which is their problem this season. They have little unbridled youth to balance the old heads (and legs). If Manly are serious about their season they should get this one. The Sure Thing: The Storm The Roughy: Penrith. Optimism could bring rewards.

NRL 2011 round 9 tips

May 5th, 2011 by Shaun · 7 Comments

As Bismark will tell you, early in the season I made the point that if Souths were to have a good year then both Sandow and Sutton need to step up their game. It seems that Chris Sandow did do that and is having a tremendous season. He has the ability to win games on his own. Sutton has had his moments but as often his wont he goes missing. Yet Souths signed Sutton to another contract. Sandow as we know is to be an Eel from 2012. And doesn't he look good in the Blue and Gold? The reaction from Richardson and Crowe was churlish to say the least. Contrast their response the Bulldogs after Idris revealed he signed with the Titans. Greenberg would have been upset that Idris was to leave but he was professional and understanding and Idris is still putting in for the Bulldogs. As for Sandow's price, the word is Rusty got it quite wrong. It is a good wage no doubt but third part deals are involved. As an Eels fan, I recognise that Sandow has potential. And this is the first season where he has had consistency. He has the running game, the kicking game, an ability to pass and a lot of heart. But Sandow alone won't fix the Eels' issues. But there are some interesting rumours floating around regards to future recruitment. And they all should be treated with a grain of salt but if a few turn out then Kearney will have found a few of his missing pieces. On to the tips! (and please use this post for rep game discussions). Broncos v Storm, Saturday 7:30pm, Suncorp Stadium The Broncos will be missing their rep players. I'd wager that some may play but some do have injuries. The Storm have named their rep players to back up but some could not play. I'll tip the Storm based on the named teams. Not a safe tip but best one can do this far out from the game. Titans v Warriors, Sunday 2:00pm, Skilled Stadium The Titans have picked their game up and take on a Warriors side that may be a little weary after rep commitments. It may be a close tussle but the Titans will have the legs to close out the game. Dragons v Cowboys, Sunday 3:00pm, WIN Jubilee Stadium Can't remember the last time the Cowboys got the Sunday game on Nine. Like the other three games, this match will depend on who backs up well after the rep games. I'm going to go for the upset. Gary Freeman made the point that Thurston usually has a big game for his club after a rep game. Not often Freeman is right but why not? Cowboys have been playing well and have the team that can take the game to the Dragons. Sea Eagles v Raiders, Monday 7:00pm, Brookvale Oval When will the Raiders win a game? Most likely not this Monday. The Sea Eagles are doing things well. The Raiders are just hapless and I can't see where they are going to find something to get them over the line. Miracles do sometimes happen in footy but Manly will need to be really of their game to not win this one. The Sure Thing: Manly The Roughy: Anyone but the Raiders

The rep season begins!

Friday night is the Anzac Test up at Skilled Park. Also on Friday night is City versus Country which is in Albury this year. The City v Country game has become an Origin trial which is not a bad thing. There is plenty of competition for spots. My only concern is that Ricky Stuart, the NSW Coach, has bough into some of the myths, like Kurt Gidley, that have plagued Origin for the past few years. At the club level, Gidley is a tremendous player but he really hasn't stepped up to Origin the past few season. He may have some value as a utility but to have him marked as a certainty was bemusing. That point may be academic depending on if he can overcome a shoulder injury. For god sakes I hope NSW does not gamble on him if fitness is still an issue come May 25. And Soward should be the NSW five-eighth. Has the form and the skills. Why not? NSW selectors could do worse and copy the Queensland approach to selecting players. The Queensland selectors always had a good eye for Origin players. NSW for some reason seem to let personal preferences and politics influences their decisions. The fact that Laurie Daley still has a say in players for NSW is a travesty! Apparently Soward has no running game. Parramatta may disagree with that assessment.

NRL 2011 round 8 tips

April 28th, 2011 by Shaun · 13 Comments

So what exactly is brewing out at the foot of the Blues Mountains coaching wise? Obviously Elliot has been asked to move on which seems to have some of the players upset. If there are disgruntled players then the board must find a why to ensure they are brought back into the fold. A club divided between the back room and playing field does not generally do that well. That issue aside the question is if Tim Sheens is going to take the money and return to where it all started for him both as a player and a coach? Sheen's coaching record is statistically sound but the majority of his success came with the Raiders. Of the 8 seasons coaching the Tigers he got them a premiership in 2005 but apart from last season, has missed the finals 6 times. Then there was the disastrous five seasons with North Queensland before the Tigers. Then again Nathan Brown is the other name being thrown around. I wonder what MB thinks? And for this round, the winners will be... Broncos v Bulldogs, Friday 7:35pm, Suncorp Stadium A far better match than Will and Kate but the powers that be have decreed otherwise. This means this will be a delayed telecast. If only Nine had a digital channel where they could show the game live. The Broncos are in rare form. The Bulldogs will push them here and there but in the end it will be the home team. Rabbitohs v Sharks, Friday 7:35pm, ANZ Stadium Will Sandow don the Blue and Gold next season? Rumours were that he all but signed but Rusty has stepped in and wants to have a chat to Sandow before he makes his decision. Makes you wonder why Souths delayed signing Sandow yet got Sutton sorted so quickly. If Sutton was having the season Sandow was having the Bunnies would be leading the comp. As for the Sharks they are falling back into the tried good but not hard enough mode of past seasons. Titans v Roosters, Saturday 5:50pm, Skilled Park The battle of Struggletown. The Roosters looked likely for times last week while the Titans tried to match Parra in terms of atrocious footy and in the end won which meant they lost the game. A coin toss this one but the TItans are due. Storm v Knights, Saturday 7:30pm, AAMI Park The Storm's loss to the Warriors was one of the best games of the season. The Knights may take some heart from the Warriors spirit but they will need more than that to get a win. I just can't see the Storm dropping a second home game in a row. Cowboys v Sea Bagels, Saturday 7:30pm, Dairy Farmers Stadium The stat to note is that Jonathan Thurston has a 70% career record against Manly. And given the Cowboys' form this season I reckon he can improve those odds just by a bit. Both teams have won three games on the trot. The Cowboys will extend their streak to four in what could be one of the games of the round. Warriors v Panthers, Sunday 12:00pm, Mt Smart Stadium Given the talk about the Panthers' players feeling aggrieved regarding the treatment of their coach, they could aim up for their coach. The Warriors gave it their all against the Storm and justly deserved the win. But they may have drained them and the Panthers could spring the upset here. Raiders v Tigers, Sunday 2:00pm, Canberra Stadium Absolute desperation time for the Raiders. If they don't win this one then their season is pretty much a lost cause. Orford comes back into the side and expectations again will weigh heavily on him. The Tigers are always willing but the Raiders have their season on the line. Surely they can do this? Dragons v Eels, Sunday 3:00pm, Kogarah Stadium I bet even Hindy's mum is avoiding tipping the Eels for this game. For the Blue and Gold to win, without Hayne, it will be one of the major upsets of the past decade. Hell, even I'm not tipping the Eels. But given odds of $5.50 I might throw a Hail Mary tenner their way. Punters are talking that Saints prop Merrin may be a Kangaroos bolter. I reckon watch the Eels' Tim Mannah in this game. He has been outstanding this year. The Sure Thing: The Dragons of course. Hoodoo, do your voodoo. The Roughy: The Bulldogs.

NRL 2011 round 7 tips

April 21st, 2011 by Shaun · 9 Comments

I've never really understood Willie Mason. Probably even Willie Mason doesn't understand Willie Mason. He was a player that could have been one of the great back rowers of the game. But apart from a few good season in the middle part of the last decade, he has largely squandered his talents. His predilection for changing clubs doesn't help. I always though he owed the Cowboys at least another season given the life line they gave him. But Willie wanted out so he's head over to England where he signed for Hull Kingston Rovers. Yet it seems that he is now eyeing a switch to union. I can understand as a career draws to a close, a player does think about that final contract that will guarantee them a start for life after footy. But that should not mean just jumping from club to club. That is a sign of instability and a sign that whatever the wage, the club is unlikely to get their money's worth. Now for this week's random guesses. Tigers v Broncos, Friday 7:35pm, SFS Marshall v Lockyer. This game promises so much. Form wise the Broncos are on the up while the Tigers seems to have a touch of the wobbly Paytens. Who doesn't seem to be playing this weekend much to the relief of Bismark. There is merit in picking either team for this game. I'm going to say the Broncos. Manly v Penrith, Friday 7:35pm, Brookvale Oval The Panthers do look likely at times as they did against the Storm. And they do seem to be my tipping bogey team tending to do the opposite to what I expect them to do. But they have a poor record at Brookvale and Manly are in form. MB will be please with my tip then. Sharks v Cowboys, Saturday 5:30pm, Toyota Park The Sharks are favourite for this game. A indication of how poorly the Cowboys travel but also taking into the dodgy record in The Shire. The Sharks after a good start seem to be falling back to old ways. On the other hand, the Cowboys seem to be a more consistent side this season. I'm going for them. Bulldogs v Rabbitohs, Saturday 7:30pm, ANZ Stadium The Bunnies may be a better side with Wesser gone. A good servant for the game, it does seem his time is up. James Roberts steps up as the new number one. The Bulldogs will be riding high after last week's sledgathon. Apparently Ennis has now hired some writers to get him ready for each game. Canberra v Knights, Sunday 2:00pm, Canberra Stadium Resurrection Sunday part 1. And it is the Raiders who will be looking to resurrect their hopes for 2011. I've heard whispers that Dugan and Tongue may play. They will be what Canberra needs. But I like the Knights in this game. The changes at the club will have the team buzzing (well part from the coach) and with Gidley sorting out his future they will be in with a shot. Eels v Titans, Sunday 2:00pm Parramatta Stadium Resurrection Sunday part 2. When the Eels stick to their game plan they can do the job. But long standing mental issues seem to still hold sway when things get tough. Regardless of the result, if the Eels can do what their coach wants it will a step forward. And what the fuck was Chris Walker doing trying to fire up Prince? You are an Eel now! Roosters v Dragons, Monday 4:00pm, SFS Stadium Hopefully there will be no stupid comparisons between the original Anzacs and a bunch of highly sportsmen whose main problem is what bar to go to at 3:00am that won't get them in trouble. The Roosters will be reeling from the past week. They will keep up for a half or so but the Dragons will do their thing and run away with the game during the second stanza. Storm v Warriors, Monday 7:00pm, AAMI Stadium Funnily enough the Warriors have a good record against Melbourne. But that may not be enough. The Storm's big three are firing and the addition of Widdop has made it a case of Greg who? It will take a might effort to beat the Storm at home and I don't think the Warriors have it in them. The Sure Thing: The Storm. The Roughy: Go the Eels! Hindy to pull off a spectacular last ditch play to save the game for the Eels.

Sterlo on sledging

April 21st, 2011 by Shaun · 2 Comments

The latest article by Sterlo is an excellent one with some sage thoughts on the art of sledging.
Michael Ennis should care, deeply care, what Nathan Hindmarsh thinks of him because when he leaves the game that will be his greatest reward and legacy. It will never be how many Tests or Origins were played or how many Premiership rings have been won because a victory is no victory at all without honour, and that honour comes from the respect of your peers. They are the harshest markers and therefore the best judges of opponents. They are the people who see the influences, effects and nuances in the unforgiving arena of competition that are missed by the masses. It is no lie when players say that the most rewarding awards to receive are those voted upon by their fellow professionals. By implying that he really didn't give two hoots to what Hindmarsh had to say, that he "was entitled to his opinion" and could "say whatever he likes," was not a good reflection on the Canterbury hooker. With the standing that Nathan holds in the game and the way he has carried himself, it seems to me there is also an implication that Michael also wouldn't care what a Darren Lockyer or a Petero Civinoceva would think of him, and that would be a real shame.
Hindmarsh's reputation when he leaves the game is assured. It is up to Ennis as to whether he wants to be remembered as just a good sledger or a good player. John Sattler also offers some wisdom.

Carney barney redux

April 19th, 2011 by Shaun · 5 Comments

You gotta love the Daily Terrorcrap at time. "Since 2009, Sydney Roosters players have been involved in 15 off-field atrocities that have made the front and back pages of The Daily Telegraph" the copy screams. Look, while many of the incidents have either been shameful, disgusting or abhorrent could they really be considered atrocities in the modern meaning of the word? Either way while the Tele goes for the throat, the SMH decided to do some journalism and look at the situation with some objectivity. Regardless whether the issue is the self destructive orbit of Watts and Carney or the drinking culture at the Roosters, Carney needs help. He needs to get away from football and learn some life skills. Granted being in the public eye with all that entails can be difficult for a young person. But there are those that handle it well. Part of the problem seems that the footballers have little outside of league to keep them occupied. A common and correct observation is that even though bad behaviour did happen back in the years before professionalism, it was limited as players had to get up to go to work the next day. I'd argue that the consistent trouble makers have little interest outside league. And that is not league's fault. Most league fans I know have varied backgrounds and interests. Maybe it is the narrow focus of the professional athlete having to devote everything to make the grade. But even if that is the case, why not offer players a chance to prove and prepare themselves beyond footy? Some clubs do have programs in place to give the players something more than training and then hours of boredom. But maybe more needs to be done. Having said that, I hope the Roosters do offer Carney help and place his welfare above that of the club. And in doing so, find a way to manage the welfare on all their players. As for Anthony Watts, suspension until his matter is decided is the correct option given how similar issues have handled in the past. The allegations are serious and it is a matter for courts to decide.

NRl 2011 round 6 tips

April 14th, 2011 by Shaun · 5 Comments

First item of the agenda. Bismark, it is your go at Words With Friends. Been waiting 7 hours for your response to my modest but strategic move. Second item on the agenda. I do want to talk about St Benny moving to the Knights for the great resurrection but not tonight. But related is it worth having a system where players can move clubs in the middle of the season? Not even a quarter of the way through the season and yet we know Idris will be with the Titans from 2012 and Darius Boyd is a certainty to join the Knights. No I don't doubt those players commitment to their current clubs. The demands of the professional athlete make this a non-issue. But it must make funny business with the minds of the teammates. Granted that in today's game, a chance of clubs could mean a chance of city but many average workers cope with this with only a few weeks notice. Hence make the offseason the proper time to negotiate a deal. That won't stop player agents putting out feelers during the season and all but signing contracts but it would reduce the circus like what we have seen this week. Onto the tips. Eels v Bulldogs, Friday 7:35pm, ANZ Stadium We know what the sensible tippers are doing. But what about you? The daring, iconoclastic tipper who obeys no rules and tips freely without fear? The Eels have won the past five straight against the Bulldogs. They also got pummelled last week by the Storm as did the Doggies the week before. Join with me in saying that Kearney's class will shine through guiding the Eels to hard fought win. Titans v West Tigers, Friday 7:35pm, Skilled Park I underestimate the Tigers last week. Even with their injury toll they are producing the goods. The trouble with this game is what to make of the Titans? Do they have anything left after such a disappointing start to the season? I won't write them off but will stick with the Tigers as Benji is doing a great job of guiding the team home. Sea Eagles v Warriors, Saturday 5:30pm, Brookvale Oval Manly welcome back the piss pots as well as Brett Stewart. That should be too much for the Warriors. The Warriors may make of a game of it but should fade away in the second half. Roosters v Broncos, Saturday 7:30pm, Bluetongue Stadium I was planning to go to this game until a higher duty called. Terrigal-Matcham Cricket Club presentation night or as I tell my team, "Buy your skip a beer night." One of the more interesting games of the round. I was leaning towards the Roosters but reckon a settled Brisbane coach will be a blessing just as much as if St Benny was coming to the club. Cowboys v Raiders, Saturday 7:30pm, Dairy Farmers Stadium Yes the Cowboys have Thurston and Bowen but they are finally getting support from the rest of the team. That is why they are winning. As for Canberra, I've said before the problem is not so much Orford (though he has been ordinary) but the forward pack failing to dominate. The Cowboys' forwards are hunting as a pack which is really assisting Thurston. And I like them at home. To go 2 for 2 for the first time since 2009. Knights v Sharks, Sunday 2:00pm, Ausgrid Stadium The ascension of St Benny will bring with him his thoughts on who is worthy of Knights jersey. That will get some fringe players fired up to make an impression. The Sharkies had the game in the bag last week but just a Harold Holt was seen lurching out of the surf with great hope, Cronulla returned to their hard luck ways. The Sharks will have a hangover from last week and find it tough up at the land of soon to be plenty. Panthers v Storm, Sunday 3:00pm, Betyourlifeaway Stadium You gotta like the Storm but I wouldn't write the Panthers off (and not that is not MB twisting my arm). The Storm have been great at home but on the road they are risky business. You know what? I'm gonna tip the second upset of the round. MB, put your money on the Storm. Bun Buns v Dragons, Monday 7:00pm, ANZ Stadium If John Land has any coaching mojo left he'd be trying to instil the meaning of "discipline" into the Dragons. Coz with all the talent and natural skills the South Sydney playing roster had, hardly any of them seem to understand what discipline means. Maybe that is why St Benny did not deem them worth. The Dragons on the other hand understand the word all too well. Souths tend to lift for game against the old fore but just see it hard to get what they need to win. The Sure Thing: Melbourne because I tipped Penrith. I'm trying to out hoodoo the hoodoo. if this does happen please remove yourself at least three tips distance to prevent being caught up in the explosion. The Roughy: Why not South Sydney? Spurned lovers have motive.
