Although the vast majority of players were "very good men, inspiring men", Ms Page said she had little sympathy for players who claimed they never asked to be role models. She dismissed the suggestion that the NRL had no right to direct the behaviour of, for example, Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall, who is facing assault charges over a 3.30am scuffle outside a McDonald's restaurant in March. "These boys know when they start playing, when they get to that level, these are the rules," she said.It is a point worth noting. The NRL is a sport that is bound to tradition. However that does not mean it cannot change. People such as Katie Page offer a different perspective and such talent is essential in ensuring the game survives.
Katie Page looks to the future
June 26th, 2011 by Shaun · Comments Off
While the Women in League round is a more than worthy recognition of the women who make the great game great, it would be nice to see more focus on women in the NRL than just during these rounds.
Which is why I believe it is essential that NRL director Katie Page be part of the game's future. And frankly, I can't see any reason why a woman could not be a first grade referee or a first grade coach. There are women referees officiating A grade games so if they are good enough then lets bring them into the NRL.
As for a coach, that will take time. As much as the game welcomes women I can see the old guard being very reluctant to move on this front. Unfortunately I suspect that any female coach would need to prove herself at a lever far greater than a male coach at the same level.
Page also makes a good point about the drinking culture in the NRL and the fact that players, whether they like it or not, are role models whose off field behavior will be subject to scrutiny.

NRL 2011 round 16 tips
June 23rd, 2011 by Shaun · 5 Comments
The farce that the citing of Jonathan Thruston reached its nadir when Bob Katter wanted to suspend standing orders to condemn the charge.
My view is that Thurston did not see Chechin and it was an accident. If I remember correctly there was a time in the AFL where any contact with the umpire meant a suspension. I hope we are not heading down that path.
Apologies for the brevity this week as I'm a little pressed for time.
On to the tips.
Tigers v Bulldogs, Friday 7:45pm, SFS Stadium
The Bulldogs were woeful last week. With Benji out for this game they may get a chance to find some form but the internal issues at the club seem to be distracting the side. The more settle Tigers will have the best chance.
Rabbitohs v Broncos, Friday 7:45pm, NIB Stadium
Go west young men! A game in Perth where the plucky but injury ravaged Bunnies will find it hard against a Broncos team that is in form as well as starting to get their injured players back.
Titans v Sharks, Saturday 5:30pm, Skilled Stadium
A game with 11 rounds to go that I can say with certainty will absolutely have no bearing on the finals. The Sharks are finding some courage and could get this.
Raiders v Eels, Saturday 7:30pm, Canberra Stadium
The Raiders have been woeful whilst the Eels have matched it with the competition heavyweights. Canberra at home are usually a good prospect but the Eels will be warmed by the fire in their bellies after being so close the past few weeks.
Warriors v Storm, Sunday 12:00pm, Mt Smart Stadium
Interesting game in that while the Storm actually get there and if they do, will they be able to get home? If they are stuck for an extended stay then they may be consoled with the two points for a win.
Panthers v Cowboys, Sunday 2:00pm, Have A Flutter Stadium
Upheavals in the Penrith camp as Gus flexes his muscles. But a new coach can do wonders. An interesting game as Thurston will be sure to unleash some of his frustrations.
Knights v Roosters, Sunday 3:00pm, Ausgrid Stadium
The Knights are looking good as King Tink builds his empire. The Roosters on the other hand are falling apart. Carney may have found some touch on the NSW cup but the NRL may not be as forgiving.
Dragons v Sea Eagles, Monday, 7:00pm, WIN Stadium
The Dragons are looking a little short of breath while the Eagles have found their wings. Never underestimate Benny (and I think some of this "The Dragons are tired" is of his own doing) but the Eagles deserve the tip.
The Sure Thing: Broncos
The Roughy: The Dragons.

Farewell Moose
June 19th, 2011 by Shaun · Comments Off
Sad news for league fans with the passing of Rex Mossop.
A dual international and Manly great he is best remembered for being the voice of league during the 70s and 80s. And also fondly remember for his Mossopisms. He was a tough man on the field and, for good and bad, just uncompromising off it as field.
Here is Mossop commenting in 1981 during an all in brawl between Newtown and Manly.

NRL 2011 Round 15 tips
June 16th, 2011 by Shaun · 9 Comments
Just a few weeks ago Petero Civoniceva's game against Titan's was lauded as a great example of how a front rower can inspire a team. After New South Wales' display last night, some are saying the game has moved past such a role. Gallen's performance as a makeshift prop was tremendous. But not every side has a Paul Gallen like player who can move easily from the second row to the front and provide such an impact. But even your average prop is more mobile than those of yesteryear. Ricky Stuart's tactics worked but new tactics often do. Once coaches wise up to it they'll learn. The traditional prop position is dying. It is just undergoing evolution as all positions do.
And was it just me but did Queensland and New South Wales have essentially the same game plan last night? That is make sure Jarrdy Hayne saw little of the ball in space as much as possible?
Tipping time.
Broncos v Dragons, Friday 7:45pm, Suncorp Stadium
Both teams are going to be a bit battered and tired. The Dragons do seem to be finding it tough at the moment and they will be missing a few players from Origin it seems. But I'm still reticent to tip against the Master as he comes up against his Apprentice. But I am going to do it anyway. The Broncos Origin players will be wanting to make a few points.
Rabbitohs v Titans, Friday 7:45pm, ANZ Stadium
If the Bunnies are going to make the eight then they need to win this one. But they are a side that just can't seem to land a killer blow when required. The Titans will have some confidence after their win over the Dragons last week. If Isaac Luke starts turning up then the Bunnies will start to improve. They get one last tip but a loss and I'm giving up on them.
Knights v Panthers, Saturday 5:30pm, Tinkler Stadium
This could be one of the best games of the round. Both teams need to win to keep their finals hopes on track. Newcastle won't be flogging the Panthers like they did last time. It will be a more even contest. In fact I believe the scale tilt just so every slightly towards Penrith.
Cowboys v Warriors, Saturday 7:30pm, Dairy Farmers Stadium
The Cowboys played quite well last week. Their forwards were quite good against Manly. The only trouble was no Jonathan Thurston. But that is resolved this week and after his quiet Wednesday night he'll be up for the game. The Warriors recent good form is fading and they will find this game tough.
Bulldogs v Sharks, Sunday 2:00pm, ANZ Stadium
Cracks are appearing at the Bulldogs close knit so called family club. Idris doesn't turn up for training, Andrew Ryan is on the way out. Not good sign. Is this something the Sharks can exploit? Who knows given their talent for finding adversity when confronted with favourable circumstances. Paul Gallen is the key. Is he really Superman?
Tigers v Storm, Sunday 3:00pm, Leichhardt Oval
If I had better foresight I'd be at this game as Leichhard on a Sunday arvo is a tremendous experience. The Tigers haven't been really convincing the past few weeks just doing allowing Benji and Robbie to do what they need to win. The Storm are in with a chance but they have only ever won one game from seven at the famous old ground. The heaving, seething mass of orange, black and white will see the Tigers home.
Manly v Parramatta, Monday 7:00pm, Brookvale Oval
For those wanting a real tip, stick with the home side. For the others, you know we are up against the old enemy. Nothing more needs to be said.
The Sure Thing: The Cowboys
The Roughy: The Titans

State of Origin II
June 15th, 2011 by Shaun · Comments Off
Ricky's Revenge or Magnificent Maroons? A lot rides on this match not at leat Stuart's reputation. For a loss, no matter how close, just wont do for NSW. All the renewal of spirt, the exclamations of pride and curios selections will mean bugger all if NSW lose. Any claims of "We are getting better" will be lost in the Queensland celebrations of another series win.
This game means everything. And I'm glad to be seeing this one live. Homebush will be a tremendoes spectacle tonight.
Go the Blues!

NRL round 14 tips
June 9th, 2011 by Shaun · 9 Comments
Loyalty ain't dead in the NRL. Darren Lockyer is set to retire a one club man. Nathan Hindmarsh will do so for the Eels. Gidley once a Knight, always a knight. Benji Marshall will never be anything other than a Tiger. If you are one of the premier players then it is easier to a one club player. But there are plenty of journeymen who played their careers out at one club. Yes the increase in money means that players will move if the dollars are high enough but it is not all about money for some.
And there is a relatively rate type of loyalty. Darius Boyd has signed with the Knights following Wayne Bennett. Wonder what Boyd will do if Bennett decides to retire after his stint with the Knights.
And then there is young Will Hopoate. Those who know me well know that I'm not a god fearing man. Nor even a god believing man. But his loyalty to his faith does can be admired. It is not something I'd do but it is a reminder that in the end, footy is just a game. A wonderful game but still.
Tipping time.
Dragons v Titans, Friday 7:45pm, WIN Jubilee Oval
The Titans have a chance to knock over the Dragons and keep whatever chances they have of semi football alive. But I'm trusting the structure of the Dragons. Even with players lost to Origin and injury, the replacements know the structure fit right in. The Dragons are used to winning and they will continue on.
Sea Eagles v Cowboys, Saturday 7:30pm, Brookvale Oval
This would be the game of the round but Origin will rob both times of their best. The Cowboys will lose a lot of direction without Thurston and that will hurt them. The Sea Eagles are travelling well and should win this comfortably.
Broncos v Raiders, Sunday 2:00pm, Suncorp Stadium
You'd think the Raiders would have a good chance against the Broncos minus Lockyer. But with Dugan and Campo injured and the heartbreak of being run down after from 22-0 will really test the Raiders mettle. It will be an interesting game just from observing the Raiders' mental state alone.
Warriors v Tigers, Sunday 4:00pm, Mt Smart Stadium
The Tigers have been winning and that is the best you can say about them. They tend to potter about for most of the game until Marshall or Farah pull something out of the trick bag in the final stages to get them over the line. The Tigers lack of emphatic form is going to hurt them. The Warriors were unlucky last week but will back home will turn their fortunes.
Storm v Roosters, Monday 7:00pm, AAMI Stadium
The Roosters had to appeal to the NRL for a salary cap exemption to get a side on the field. Melbourne had no issue with fielding a side but one that is minus their big three. But like the Dragons, I'm going to trust in the system. A Roosters win could see them start a run to the finals but the loss of Pearce and Minichello will hurt them with the side really not on form. Bellamy's structure will see the Storm home.
The Sure Thing: The Sea Eagles
The Roughy: The Roosters if Carney steps up.

Mini v Hayne
June 6th, 2011 by Shaun · 5 Comments
The return of Anthony Minichello to the NSW side is a great story. His form has been very good for the Roosters and he won't let anyone down. But I've still go to ask why is Hayne still on the wing. It still seems a strange decision. New South Wales do lack depth in the outside backs at the moment but Hayne at 1 makes more sense.
If Stuart is smart, he'll move Minichello to the wing during attack and give Hayne a little more freedom at fullback. Otherwise to keep Hayne out on the wing will be a waste regardless of how well he has played in that position during past campaigns.
The forward pack is very interesting given only two props. Tim Mannah deserves a run on spot. He took advantage of his limited time in Origin I to show he is going to be the mainstay of the New South Wales pack for quite a few seasons to come. Gallen to the front row makes sense. It is a gamble on mobility and I'm concerned that it may be at the cost of impact especially during the early stages of the game.
Stuart is putting a lot of faith in what seems to be a make shift side. In 9 days we'll see if it pays off.

NRL 2011 Round 13 tips
June 2nd, 2011 by Shaun · 5 Comments
Last Saturday, Newcastle beat Parra by two points. The penalty goal that was the difference came from ref Brett Suttor claiming a Moi Moi tackles was too high. But the call was wrong. With regards to how the call influenced the game, ref boss Bill Harrigan said:
"There are a number of decisions that can cost a team a game that they themselves are responsible for," he said. "If there's a decision which had an impact on the game you can say it contributed or it could have a hand in a team losing a game but it certainly can't cost them a game." He said an apology to Parramatta was unnecessary. "It's just part and parcel of the game," he said. "No one's making Brett Morris stand on a soapbox and apologise for not taking that ball (that led to a Queensland try) in the State of Origin (game last Wednesday)."For once I agree with Bill. To the tips! Eels v Dragon, Friday 7:45pm, Parramatta Stadium Dare I dream? It would be a massive upset but the Eels are intent in making Parramatta Stadium once more a formidable venue for visiting teams. I'm going to be sensible but hope springs eternal. Sharks v Broncos, Friday 7:45pm, Toyota Park The Sharks better start playing their season one game at a time. For if they start thinking ahead and especially to 2012, it could become quite depressing. A win against the Broncos however would cheer them up. It is also Lockyer's last game in Sydney (exluding Origin II). I think the Sharkies can get this game. Titans v Panthers, Saturday 5:50pm, Skilled Park MB will please to note that I tipped the Panthers last week and they won. I'm not sure how he will feel about me tipping them a second week in a row. The Titans will push them hard but they lack to finish of past seasons. Gus' influence is doing the Panthers good. Bulldogs v Sea Eagles, Saturday 7:30pm, ANZ Stadium After last week I said I was not going to take Manly lightly anymore. The Dogs are starting to fall off the pace after a lot of promise while Manly seems to be finding more confidence each game. Watmough will be wanting to remind Sticky that he has played Origin so expect him to be everywhere. Roosters v Warriors, Saturday 7:30pm, SFS I wonder what "truths" were told at the alleged truth session held by the players during the week? I really don't blame Smithy. It seems to be more of a culture problem, the one that lead Carney back to his naughty ways again. The Warriors are a team properly bonded and hence the more likely to win. Raiders v Cowboys, Sunday 2:00pm, Canberra Stadium The word is that Campo and Orford will be back soon. So a mid season charge may be on. Or Canberra could find their problems need more than the return of one player to resolve. The Cowboys have really got themselves sorted out this year. Thurston is in rate form even for him and that will get them home. Rabbitohs v Storm, Sunday 3:00pm, ANZ Stadium Inglis finally gets back on the field but Souths are still missing their big boppers. A fully fit Souths against the Storm has the promise of a great spectacle. But a busted Souths will try hard but are unlikely to get over the Storm. Tigers v Knights, Monday 7:00pm, Leichardt Oval Monday night footy at Leichahrdt! Oh that I was again living in Balmain. Both teams showed spirit last week and this promises a fierce contest. But the Tigers seem rise when they return to their spiritual home. A return to winning ways for the black and gold. The Sure Thing: The Storm The Roughy:The Raiders.

NRL 2011 round 12 tips
May 26th, 2011 by Shaun · 8 Comments
There were some observations that because of the lack of Origin players the standard of footy last round was poor quality. The Tigers v Panthers game wasn't one of the best. But it wasn't due to a lack of Origin players. It was due to a disorganised Tigers (with a seemingly disinterested Benji Marshall) against a Penrith outfit missing some key players but putting in all the effort they could.
The quality of the Warriors v Rabbitohs ebbed and flowed with plenty of diamonds and rocks. The player most responsible for this was Krisnan Inu. But the Bunnies sure put in and with 4 Warriors tries disallowed it was a gripping game.
Maybe the Eels v Sharks game was actually affected by Origin though different fortunes for both teams. The Sharks missed Snowden and Gallen but the Eels finally clicked. Hayne played his part but it was team effort.
I can't remember the Roosters v Knights game but that is more due that I didn't get a chance to see it rather than a comment on the quality.
Origin doesn't not mean the competition sort of meanders until the stars are back on deck. For the teams in the bottom half of the comp this is their turn to strike and start climbing up the ladder. Sure the big game create all the talk but don't write off this part of the competition. There is plenty of jostling going on to position teams for the post Origin finals race.
And now the envelope with the tips!
Broncos v Manly, Friday 7:00 pm, Suncorp Stadium
Game one of the double header (and on delayed telecast as per usual). Regardless of having played on Wednesday night the Origin Broncs will be feeling little pain. Let's hope Thaiday does not start the game where he left off in Origin. Of course Manly won't back down from a fight if offered. And Brisbane will offer one at least metaphorically. I'm looking forward toggle game of evenly matched teams. The Broncos to win off the lingering thrill of Origin victory.
Bulldogs v Titans, Friday 8:45pm, Suncorp Stadium
I expected the dogs to be better this season. Their halves are still learning the game which make it hard when things don't click. The Titans are still an unknown quantity given their early season woes. They will push the Dogs but I get the feeling Canterbury will like the trip north.
Knights v Eels, Saturday 5:30pm, Ausgrid Stadium
the Knights are looking over their shoulders at their incoming coach and it seems to be causing some disruption. The Eels on the other hand seemed to have reached an understanding with their new coach and are looking ahead. But one good win means nothing unles their is a follow up. The Knights will provide formidable resistance and the Eels will have to grind periods of the game out. If they can do that and their new halves fire again along with Hayne a win will ensue. But it will be a slog.
Cowboys v Roosters, Saturday 7:30pm, Dairy Farmers Stadium
Thurston v Carney. Origin legend versus Origin hopeful. There is the notion that Thurston tends to play well for his club following an Origin game. But he has been doing that all year. Helped by his team that is provided the support he needs. The Roosters on the other hand are struggling. I just don't think that Townsville will be that warm of a welcome.
Storm v Sharks, Sunday 2:00pm, AAMI Park
The Sharks big hope is that that the Storm a felling a bit tired after origin. Then again Gallen may also be feeling the mid week game and find stemming the flow of possession is once again is too much. Yes, the last time if has the Storm as certainties they Raiders did them over but the Storm really should win this one.
Dragons v Tigers, Sunday 3:00pm, WIN Jubilee Oval
Is all well in the Tigers camp? The body language by the players last week was a little off as was their game. Benji especially seemed to wish he was elsewhere doing nothing until he really had to. And there were strange rumours on Twitter today re a dust up at Tigers' training though nothing more was heard after the initial flurry. Still something doesn't seem right. Because if the Tigers are nothing less that united and committed even a Dragons sides with half the team backing up from Origin is going to destroy them.
Panthers v Rabbitohs, Monday 7:00pm, Penrith Stadium
Are the Bunnies going to have a forward pack by the end of the season? Their injury woes seem to have no end. But they did put in against the Warriors which shows that despite all the hardship the team spirit remains strong. And it smells like team spirit out Penrith way as the influence of Gus starts to shapes the second half of their season. Souths will try hard and Sandow is capable of turning a game but if Penrith can hold the ball, discipline will see them home. I'm looking forward to this game. It could be quite a good one.
The Sure Thing: The Storm for sure.
The Roughy: The Bunnies.

State of Origin 2011 Game 1
May 24th, 2011 by Shaun · 2 Comments
It is finally here! The first game of State of Origin kicks off tomorrow night. I don't have the time to really do a full analysis other than go the Blues.
Regardless of my issues with some of the selections that is in the past. Time to get behind the boys and hope that they can pull off a great win and make game 2 so very important.
Have fun talking about the game in the comments.
