World Cup discussion post

June 12th, 2010 by Shaun · 10 Comments

While most of us prefer sports with oblate spheroids, the round ball game’s World Cup can be admired as a tremendous sporting spectacle. It even sparks the interest of people like me who barely pay attention to the game other wise.

Hand sites are SBS’ The World Game and this nifty World Cup Calendar.

So feel free to discuss away what is happening over in South Africa.

Wow… my $10 bet on the USA nearly paid off – would have been $70!

I think it’s fair to say that this round is a little lacking on the ‘need to win it’ stakes… it seems to me that everyone just wants to do the minimum and get, at worst, a draw – we’ve seen 3 out of 5 so far.

I don’t think it’s until the next round that the fireworks start.

    … that’s my theory anyway!

And how could we not love the fumble by Robert Green. For a moment we were all Americans. Until we realised what that meant and decided it was not a good thing. But worth watching a few times.

As is the Daily Show’s Jon Oliver visiting the US team.

Unbelievable level of arrogance shown by Dim VerBlokhead. To think he was looking forward to that after came interview telling of how his second-string side came away with a draw against Germany. I could understand if this team was up against Serbia – but not the top ranked team in the group. You would have to play your best team, in their positions. Suffice to say, Dim won’t be Socceroo coach past this month. The selections (eg Scott Chipperfield?? sure he was NSL player of the year 2 years running – but my god, that was 10 years ago now!!). If this is really just about the best team we had, no youngsters have come through this century with talent, then forget it. It’s over for 2010 and forget about the future.

As I said elsewhere, the big mistake was leaving out Hindmarsh.

    Oh… BTW :

    Trivia.

Who was the last person to lose his job by calling someone a Black C***t ?

And to whom was he referring?

    (I remember it well!)

Yeah, but imagine the first play he tried to run at Hindmarsh. He wouldn’t be acting once he hits the ground.

Of course, Hindy would get a red card but it would put the fear of god into the opposition.

Oh, and the answer is Brian Fletcher and Dean Widders.

Referring to someone as black is racist ?? (please do tell what the correct word is here ??) , as for the profanity – people use that about others all the time. And State of Origin – The game that has long been promoted as the two states that hate each other’s guts ?? Can’t have it both ways, D.Gallop – but you’re the boss, so I guess you can.
