Ooooooh, a little snarky toward the Cows are we Shaun?

I’ll go all of these (including the Eeeels) except fucking Manly and Penrith.

Really looking forward to this weekend. It’s that time of year when you work out who’s the real deal and who’s been pratting around for half the season – I speak of course about Souths and Wests both of whom I expect to come out fired-up

    Gooooo Sammy Stosur!!!

Melbourne – Anyone with a basic knowledge of mathematics will know that the Storm have had 18 points deducted so far this season. If they ended up gaining a court injuction to retain their points -(not saying they will, and not saying that would be fair, just saying) they would be equal competition leader – at this stage anyway. Simpletons would have you believe that the Storm have nothing to play for this year. I’m not one of those. Read this from The Age 21/5/10..

“……. representing Melbourne is Allan Myers, QC, regarded as one of Australia’s greatest legal minds. Myers also happens to be one of Australia’s richest men, with a personal fortune estimated at $778 million by BRW magazine.

To put that in perspective, according to BRW, Myers is worth more than Greg Norman ($377 million), Geelong president Frank Costa ($202 million) and former Minardi owner Paul Stoddart ($155 million) combined.

It means that he can pick and choose his battles, and this time Myers has chosen to represent Storm.

Instructing Myers from the bench will be another legal heavyweight, Leon Zwier of law firm Arnold Bloch Leibler, a man not adverse to a scrap.

Zwier represented Slater & Gordon in disputes with British American Tobacco, as well as the Pratt family’s Visy Industries in its regulatory and class action battles, and Patrick in its defence of a hostile takeover by Toll Holdings.

Zwier will be assisted by senior litigation counsel Robert Heathcote, another who fought the might of British American Tobacco. He is listed in The Best of the Best – World’s Leading Lawyers, a publication that identifies the world’s best 20 lawyers in any given field. His clients include ANZ, BHP Billiton, Foster’s, NAB, James Hardie and now Storm.”

Bulldogs. The unheralded ball-player Gary Warburton to be a real handful, especially in the wet. I also think their best chances to get a few wins will be against teams that are “on-the-cuff” finals teams, like the Tigers.

Newcastle. The one thing that could throw the game the Panthers way is a bit of niggle simmering from the last meeting. Something to fire up a team that seems to coast a bit too much. So without any niggle, Newcastle to take advantage.

Cronulla. For me, the Roosters are still a bit inconsistent. Don’t underrate Barrett’s last throw of the dice at representative football. Tim Smith also can only improve on his worst game ever.

New Zealand. I had started typing St George and my thoughts, then deleted and started again. You know what? a team that lets in 50 points the week before will usually have a memory bank long enough to not have it happen the next week. Just ask the Tigers. Added to that, the Warriors don’t need to spend any energy getting themselves up for this one at all – they are already playing against the competition leaders. St George still without a bye until next week and need to stay up for one more. Might take it’s toll.

Canberra. No team this year has beaten the Dragons and been able to stay up for the next game. Fortunately for the Raiders, their win was followed by the bye – which I think will make all the difference. Their backline structure looked great at WIN the week before last. It shouldn’t disappear overnight.

Brisbane. Toss of the coin game. I think the table belies the Broncos form at the moment.

Souths. Not many favours to go the Cowboys way. Treated by the refs more like the Indians in this one.

    Norths Tiger // Jun 4, 2010 at 12:31 pm

    It’s Penrith stat time again:

Penrith has not lost (12 wins and a draw) in their last 13 home games as favourite with the bookies.

Their last defeat as home favourite: R18 2008 against…Newcastle! (the game Gidley played full back and dummy half brilliantly)

I think they’re a bit vulnerable here. No Petero and Frank P, they may be a bit complacent coming home against a team they’re expected to beat, while Newcastle is almost back to full strength.

    Mountain Boy // Jun 4, 2010 at 1:16 pm

Hang on NT- you say this long standing home favourite stat will now come to an “end”, meaning a Panthers loss, yet your previous away favourite loss stat you concluded was set to “continue”, (also meaning a Panthers loss).

I think I’ve found a stat showing how often you support the team playing against Penrith, I’m calculating it to be around the 100% mark.

    Norths Tiger // Jun 4, 2010 at 1:45 pm

Ahh yes, MB, but the previous stat was more of a curiosity than an indicator. I was worried about the possibility of Penrith losing to Cronulla, but didn’t seriously consider it.

In this case, I looked at the teams and their situations and gave strong thought to Newcastle prior to discovering the stat. For the record, I have tipped Penrith in 8 out of their 11 games this season.

    Mountain Boy // Jun 4, 2010 at 4:10 pm

Realistically, I don’t see the Panthers scoring any points in the next month apart from the bye. They then need to win about five more games just to make it into the 8. I’d like to be proven wrong – and a win Saturday arvo could be real handy in the final wash up.

    Crikey!

Very tired after a hard week at work but couldn’t tear myself away from the Eels Storm match – most entertaining game of the season so far by a country mile.

I think I may have mentioned at Origin the other night how I’d like to see Slater and Hayne get it on….

    What a game. .. what a win.

    Shaun // Jun 5, 2010 at 2:08 pm

Ah, what a game it was. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was revenge for the GF but it was a sweet victory. This game should set up the rest of the Eels’ season.

Mannah would look good in a Blues jersey.

Unfortunately did hear via Twitter that Parra fans at the game were abusing Storm fans including one 9 year old boy who went home at half time in tears. I sent a message of support to his mum who was on Twitter because that is a disgusting, cowardly act by the Parra fans involved. The other Eels fans I know on Twitter were equally ashamed at the behaviour of some fellow supporters.

Regards the ‘other’ game last night – would anyone here agree that had the Bulldogs been wearing Red and White instead of Blue and Green that their so-called forward pass no-try(which not much doubt would have won them the game), would have been called sweet-as?

    Bismark O'Measles // Jun 5, 2010 at 6:38 pm

hmmmm… not sure I agree… it was very very flat… but good to see Mr Lui kicking the clincher instead of the more obvious choices.

Tigers have got some great players coming through – Dwyer, Fifita, Daniela etc. along with some real seasoned old veterans who are all on song (or thereabouts). Loving their game at the moment.

Let’s see how many times Sidelined chooses to post this comment!

Go Bunnies on Monday night – if the weather holds I’ll take young Gnasher out there…. I wasn’t game to go on Friday to see the Tiges!

    Mountain Boy // Jun 5, 2010 at 9:52 pm

BM – I didnt ask if was a fair pass, I asked if the team had been wearing red and white, would it have been a 4-pointer? My answer is “yes”. Unfortunately there seems to be some clear double standards when ref-ing certain teams.

Niggle was what I thought would keep Penrith in their game tonight when things got tight, and blow me down, I was right. It was a real good thing to happen. I have been worried for a while that they have not been putting their stamp on games on the physical side of things, but after tonight, I think they are back on track. Maybe a funny thing to say about a team who, provisionally, are equal comp leaders, but there definitely was a risk that just playing flash and not wanting to mix it could have quickly ended their season. We now just await the return of Civa, Frankie, and Elford.

MB, I’m still not convinced that the Storm legal battle will resolve anything. Especially with the revelation that Cam Smith had three different contracts and the loud whispers that some (including members of the board) who denied any knowledge of the payments actually knew what was going on.

There is more to come from this and it seems that it won’t be good news for the Storm.

And remember that News Ltd have the nuclear option of sacking the four independent directors.

So Slater, after leading with knees into a tackle and then deliberately elbowing Hayne in the back of the head somehow does not get cited.

Most assuredly a jokediciary with obvious Queensland sympathies.

    Mountain Boy // Jun 8, 2010 at 9:56 am

come on now Shaun, what was Hayne leading with in the preliminary final last year? I recall he still played the next game himself (although not that well). Truth is that all players have intent to hurt the other team, but in this one there was no contact. If everyone that had a swing and a miss got charged we would be watching u/20′s every week. Hayne’s head did contact Slater’s and although minor on the face of it, it is akin to spitting and tripping ie. a cowardly act
