Sideliners, here is the disturbing image I hoped to never have to see.
My nephew playing ru — God, I can’t even say it – rugby union.
He went to live for a few months in the south-west USA with family. I knew my sister’s brother-in-law coached a local yawnion team but little did I know that this — to quote Big Harto — Chief Rat in the Ranks would recruit my own flesh and blood. He left a delightful teenage geek, utterly indifferent to team sport of every kind, unless World of Warcraft counts. He returns as … I don’t even know what.
They say he “enjoys it” and “wants to keep playing when he gets home.” !!! I’m a little comforted by the certain knowledge his country state high school surely doesn’t have a rah rah team. Checkmate, kiddo!
As Bedsy as my witness, I will never have children if this is the heartache they cause.

I’m so sorry Shaun .. it’s such a disappointment for a proud uncle.
Anyway, there’s still hope, he hasn’t taken up gridiron (yet)!

Errr, well this post is by me not Shaun. My own fault really since I hardly use my posting privileges that people forget I have them. Never fear- the Soccball World Cup is near and I am taking time off work to stay up all night taking it all in, so I shall post more, more.
But also, Bismark, I believe you miss the point, comrade. I wouldn’t mind if he took up Gridiron, not at all. But RUGBY? Where’s my fainting couch.

Disagree.
NOTHING worse than gridiron – would rather watch Union.
Correction, would rather watch an Onion

Mungo, I actually just noticed this post. You should post more often.
But as for your nephew, tell him the best way to get the big bucks in yawnion is to play league. Then when he goes to play league, hope that the NRL gets its act together and league players will never be tempted by yawnion again. Also gives you time to convert him to playing league.
I consider that a sound plan and good advice.
