Two teams both missing their key playmaker. And both played very ordinary last weekend the difference being the Roosters copped a paint peeling halt time spray that got them home. The Roosters are inconsistent but should be a little less scrappy than the Cowboys.

The Roughy: Manly only for a lack of options.

Australia – form and sentiment abound.

City – They really need to win well here to stop NSW selectors from recalling Kim-Ordinary to the team.

On the subject of Origin and city-country, I think I know where the Blues problem lies. Its this stupid selection trial game itself. The two teams’ mentality is lets beat the bejesus out of each other. Each player also says – I want to play for NSW and I dont really care that much on whether my teammates make it in, so long as I make it in. Only once the blues team is selected will I start trying to focus on team unity for Origin I. Compare this to the QLD mentality of 1/ not having such a selection trial and 2/ having all QLD eligible players taught to support each other through selection periods, regardless of who gets picked in the state team. All eligible players simply united in beating NSW from the outset. The best thing NSW could do, to start winning again, is simply get rid of this game. Else put it on after Origin is over, as a true exhibition. Ahhh, off the chest. Much better.

Manly – For as much as St George dominated most of last season, their record against other top 8 teams (including the semis) was only just better than 50-50. Award that controversial game at WIN to the Bulldogs, and the record would show less than 50% wins against top 8 teams. Manly only finishing 5th last year, but who’s record against other top 8 teams was still just better than 50-50. Interesting – possibly only to me, but thats ok. Add to this a 48-18 shellacking at the hands of the Dragons last meeting at WIN, and both teams fully aware of a payback at the opposite venue.

Newcastle – We will see if Newcastle are showing themselves as a true top 8 team, and Gold Coast’s good away form, just a phase they are going through… or the complete opposite to the above comments

Brisbane – I hear that Melbourne will keep their form up this year to prove a point. Unfortunately, they will quickly realise that their form is just confirming that they are winning because they have cheated the cap. I think they will realise that this week, that winning shows them in a bad light too.

Nth Qld – The chooks seem better on paper, but have they got points in them without Pearce on the field? They didnt get many last week. Cowboys with no Thurston either, but coin toss came up – tails.

Just watched the City v Country game and for a rep game that some (elsewhere) claim to mean nothing, they forgot to tell the players.

Ennis won the batttle over Farah and because of that he will be the Origin hooker. Which means Kimmorely will likely be half back but what other options do we have? Hodkinson just isn’t up for it yet. Do we pray for a miracle recovery for Mitchell Pearce?

Keating was impressive at five-eigth despite some early fumble. Tim Mannah also played well when he was on the field.

Josh Duggan was excellent as full back and could be an Origin bolter. Though it will be hard to displace Hayne (even if he had an ordinary game last night though it largely wasn’t his fault). The selectors of course will probably picked neither at fullback and go with Gidley,

I didn’t rate him that much last year but I was very impressed with Idris. So much, I’d put him in the centres for Origin. And Burt did what has done for Parra all these years and showed his value. Put him on the wing for Origin and he wouldn’t let the side down.

All in all a really enjoyable game that has created some interesting selection issues f0r Origin.

As for the test, the weather made for an ordinary game that lacked a little compared to City v Country. The Australian attack looked out of sorts. They were dangerous at times but the timing was not there. However, if the game was played in dry weather Australia would have racked up more points. Wet weather can be an equaliser.

MB I do agree that Queenslander support each other better. It is why they have won four series in a row.

But I don’t think City v Country is the problem. The problem is with the selectors and coach for NSW. Craig Bellamy has lost two series in a row yet he gets a third chance? The combination of him and Daley have been a disaster for NSW. They chop and change players with no real sense of what type of player Origin needs (insert my usual rant of why Hindmarsh should be picked here).

You think Daley would understand what it takes to win Origin but he seems more interested in picking his pet players. Good players at club or even international level don’t necessary make good origin players. Why do we have to suffer the Cane Toads glee each season when we pick Paul Gallen?

As for Bellamy he does have influence as is the coach’s right. But his lack of Origin nous was exposed when Steve Turner was picked on wing for one game. Great club winger but was exposed at Origin level.

NSW needs a coach who is more of a figurehead, like Meninga for QLD. QLD simply understand Origin much better and NSW refuse to acknowledge that. For NSW, it is all about personalities rather than the end result.

    Time to bring back Gus!

    Mountain Boy // May 8, 2010 at 11:11 pm

Well Gus seems content to fill his time concentrating on his hidden agendas, telling us all we need to get rid of the corner posts. Gus seems to be more gas these days.

What about Freddy. He never let them down wearing the blue ?

But MB, the corner posts! They..well..you know..sit there! Deary, deary deary me.

Good call re the Manly/St George game.

But yes Freddie would be worth a punt.

Is my ‘pattern’ stat – of losing to St George one week then winning the next week / or winning against St George one week then losing the next, set to continue ? If it is, it means next week the Sharks beat the Panthers (damn that pattern), …. and the Eels beat Manly at Brookvale!

    Mountain Boy // May 8, 2010 at 11:40 pm

They’ve been traditional markings out of the field for the past 102 seasons. Lets just say, when we watch a game played fifty years ago and dont recognise it anymore as the same game, people like Gus, and everyone else that think rules need to be changed on a seasonal basis, need to be lined up and stoned.

Nothing warms my heart quite like Kimmorley doing well enough at the right time to be in consideration for the NSW halfback spot.

  • Gravatar

    Mountain Boy // May 9, 2010 at 8:38 pm

.. still the cockles will be no warmer than in the hearts of those north of the border. ;p

Origin has been tough to watch for years, and will get no easier if selectors have to opt for players who have let down their state on numerous occasions in the past.

Soward, anyone heard of him? Plays half, has a kicking game, kicks goals. Its a damn conspiracy that this guy gets to hide in his little red and white jumper both this year and last year. Karma won out last year as it usually does, when the Dragons couldn’t win even with Soward playing through the Origin period. If he isn’t used again this year, oh well, Karma to win again.

    Shaun // May 9, 2010 at 10:49 pm

Excluding the rep games a miserable 0 from 3. The Manly players obviously listened to Des, a team lost even after scoring 30 odd points and the Storm did their News Ltd brothers a favour.

MB, I’m unsure on Soward when the pressure is on. But it wouldn’t hurt to give him a try. Sadly I see NSW selectors sticking to their tried and proven plan of picking the wrong players in the wrong positions so that they can lose the serious.

I’m sure I said this last year but the current NSW mentality seems to be about trying not to lose the game. Queensland are about winning the game. A big difference.

  • Gravatar

    gilmae // May 10, 2010 at 10:15 pm

I think you Blues are being a tad defeatist. Is that a defense mechanism? I’m not so sure this year. The back line just doesn’t have the same shimmer this year, particularly when I consider potential NSW lineups: Tahu, Morris and Hayne make me nervous. Maybe Idris in there as well. And – I’ve said this every year for the past four, mind – eventually Petero isn’t going to be able to make his body do the Origin thing, no matter how strong the will.

So here’s praying for Gallen, Kimmy and – dare I dream? – Groethe.

Shaun : 2009 Soward Dally M 5/8th of the year , Summons medalist, and 4th in overall counting on the night. Currently 5/8 of the team thats leading the comp (even if Melbourne keep their points). You think the 4th rated best player in the comp. might be out of place amongst the best 34 ???? deary, deary me back at ya.

    Shaun // May 10, 2010 at 10:26 pm

As a league fan, it was great to see Matt Bowen in full flight again tonight. Had a rough time and I hope he has a injury free run. And doesn’t play Origin.;-)

But the Roosters were woeful. The Cowboys could be onto a good thing if they keep this form up when Thurston returns.

But there is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. The bloody awful sleeve tattoos of players like Carney and Friend. Now, don’t get me wrong. I have a few tatts myself but I really don’t like the full sleeves that some have. It seems a collection of random ideas not some great art (ie Japanese style tatts).

Where is the colour? Sleeve tatts look great with colour (excluding the Polynesian tatts as that is a different style and obviously culture) and a coherent design/theme. Each to their own I suppose but it just doesn’t look that great.

And as for Inu and Mateo leaving the Eels, it is a little disappointing.

However both players have not been consistent over the past few seasons. They have flashes of brilliance but seem to have trouble putting regular performances together.

The word is both players wanted to stay at the Eels. But will the cap tightening and the Warriors offering very good coin they decided to go.

But most Parra fans wish them well and that the do well for their new club (except when they play the Eels).

    Shaun // May 10, 2010 at 10:42 pm

    @gilmae

I was thinking about Queensland on the way home and they are quite vulnerable this year. The back line has lost a lot with Hodges and Hunt gone. My feeling this could be Queenland’s last hurrah as they do it for Lockyer and Petero.

    @MB

Yes, Soward is great player but his temperament has not been tested. Manly got to him on Saturday and blunted his effectiveness. He at least should have got a run in City v Country.

I think there is also a myth that small players are not cut out for Origin. Soward or Preston Campbell would be great to bring on when the forwards are tiring and the ruck starts to open up.

  • Gravatar

    Mountain Boy // May 10, 2010 at 11:19 pm

Anyone remember the smallest to play Origin? Forget about his size, he hadn’t even played first grade before. He tore us apart for years and yet we still think that footballers need to fit some kind of stereotype. We will remember him as a great player, not as a table-dancer, and Origin was his making. If only there was some way of getting rid of the NSW selectors, and replace them with some who haven’t packed into as many scrums.

Mateo, Inu. Surely they were both integral to Parra’s success in 2009. See what the cap does to the team that didn’t even win (on the day anyway). Mortimer and Hayne with a spurt of form were suddenly worth more and something had to give because of the cap – but why should that be? How can you ever build a team from one year to the next – when improving means you are “required” to lose players the next year? Instead of building, Parra are suddenly rebuilding. The cap is certainly flawed.

Sure thing loses, roughy wins, tipping the Newcastle game nigh-on-impossible. Not to fear Shaun, in all of this there’s a pattern. A pattern yet to be broken all season. Next week that pattern says after Manly beat St George this week, that Parra will beat Manly next Monday. The rest of the round shouldn’t matter too much, right? Unfortunately for me, after the Sharks went down to the Saints the week before their bye, they are all set to win against Penrith – or can the Panthers break this hoodoo with a bit of black magic voodoo? (doubting they will be allowed to wear their away blue shirts this week)

MB, from memory I think that is the first time the Sure Thing has not won this season.

But I’m intrigued by the implication that there are other games this weekend besides the Eels v Eagles. I thought that was the only games? ;-)

Gasnier to play for $50K + match payments of $4K per game that’s …. $118K if he plays the rest of the season. Amazing how teams that won lasy year’s minor premiership, had several players make their rep debuts that year, currently first on the ladder and still be so far under the salary cap. Defies belief. Hang on, didn’t Wendell retire because they couldn’t afford ‘his’ match payments ???

  • Gravatar

    Shaun // May 12, 2010 at 11:04 pm

Well Wendell and Justin Poore left so there may be some room under the cap. Especially if those that did make their rep debute (ie Weyman) did not receive an upgrade.

Next year will be interesting. Gaz’s match payments will count towards the cap and he’ll be wanting around 400k.

    Mountain Boy // May 13, 2010 at 2:20 pm

I just had this gut-feeling ….. “The independent members of Melbourne Storm’s board have sought legal advice regarding the manner the NRL decided on the harsh penalties it handed the club last month for salary-cap rorting.
Appointed acting chief executive of the club following the revelations the Storm had been cheating the salary cap for the past five years, News Limited’s director of corporate affairs, Greg Baxter, confirmed the new development on Thursday morning.
According to Baxter, the four independent members of the club’s board, chairman Rob Moodie, Petra Fawcett, Peter Maher and Gerry Ryan, have spoken to leading Melbourne barrister Allan Myers, QC.
Myers reportedly told the quartet NRL CEO David Gallop had acted without procedural fairness in not only stripping the club of its 2007 and 2009 premierships but also taking away the points it had accrued to that point of 2010 and preventing the Storm claiming any further points this year.”

    Mountain Boy // May 13, 2010 at 2:27 pm

April 26 … My prediction is that the Storm will take the NRL to court, get an injunction to play the rest of the season, and until the matter is decided, have their points reinstated. I’m not on either side of the fence, I just think this will happen. :)
