Brisbane Broncos draw for 2010
The Broncos in 2010 will…
…make me eat my words at some stage during the season. Every time I write them off I regret it. But this season could be tougher than the past. The losses of Dave Taylor, Karmichael Hunt and effectively Justin Hodges (injured) will hurt the Broncos. They do have some good young players coming through but they will find it hard to replace those three.
Like past seasons, the Broncos’ fortunes hinge of Lockyer’s fitness. A good run injury free run for Lockyer will get Brisbane close to the eight again. There will also a lot of interest in Tim Smith who has joined the Broncos after returning from a stint with Wigan. If he can stay out of trouble and find his feet in the NRL, he could be a good addition to the team.
Look, I don’t want to say the Broncos can’t make the eight. If the young players step up and the club has, Hodges aside, an injury free campaign they will be competitive. But if I was a betting man, which stupidly I sometimes am, I’d wager that they will make the eight but only just.
To win the comp, the Broncos are at $17. To make the eight, $1.95.

“Karmichael Hunt (greed)”
Really?

Oh yeah, I forgot. The switch is for “challenge.”
Hunt is simply being used by the AFL for the publicity. They’ll get a lot from him via publicity and Hunt will get big bucks to be a mediocre AFL player. If he is happy with that arrangement then good for him.
In a few years, Hunt will be back in the NRL and the Gold Coast club happy they have a over paid under achiever off the books.

Oh no, I’m happy to describe it as leaving for more money. But the thing is, I just can’t call it greed. Otherwise I have to face the fact that all those times I left a job for more money, I wasn’t looking after me and mine, I was just being greedy.
And I definitely can’t ever leave IT.

Yeah, but what would you say if you boss tells you that they have hired a bloke on a 6 figure income to head up development and write code whose previous job was a call centre manager whose only experience at coding was writing some basic back in high school?
I can moving to a better job for money but it can be done with integrity which Hunt’s move lacks.
As for IT, I’m working on moving out of the industry but that is another story.

I’d say that as he is heading up production, his prior management experience is more relevant than his coding experience anyway.
And best of luck to him. If he can pull it off he’ll be laughing and if he can’t he come back and almost all the teams will want to sign him.
Calling it ‘Greed’ just seems silly.

And if his experience is not relevant yet he gets the job over better qualified candidates?
Of course, if I put myself in Hunt’s position I can’t rule out that I wouldn’t go for the money. But the whole deal doesn’t make any sense.
If Hunt does do well it won’t be the first time I’m wrong. But I reckon Hunt will find out that money isn’t everything.
