    Aha .. A friend!

Oh yes, the Tigers should be in for one on Friday night. If I hadn’t torn three of my seven or so adductors, I’d be going – that’s what you get for jogging round Redfern Oval when you should be in a perfectly good pub relaxing….. I digress.

In my opinion these are two of the best matched sides in the comp right now and if they both turn up to play, this will be an absolute stonker (unless the ref ruins it). If in doubt, please see MB’s rant the other week which sums up the buffoonery that goes on in this game – what’s worse, it’s applied inconsistently! Some might say that makes the game more exciting – it certainly gives me something to have a gripe about – while I’m at it, did I mention the 9 seconds the Bunnies lost at the end of round 11….? Don’t start me off Shaun…..

So, here we are three weeks out from the end of the season with everything to play for. I would have loved to see the Bunnies, Eels and Tigers all in the eight but it probably won’t happen – let’s just sit back and enjoy the fireworks.

    My tips :

    TIGERS
    DRAGONS
    NEWCASTLE
    SOUTHS
    RAIDERS
    TITANS
    STORM
    DOGS

Thus, next weeks table (bar the top and bottom 4 ) will look like this :

    5. Tigers
    6. Knights
    7. Sea Eagles
    8. Broncos
    9. Rabbitohs
    10.Panthers
    11. Eels
    12. Cows

Three games, I don’t have to tell you which ones, can dramatically change all this.

    Bring it on!

Ooh, that sounds painful Bismark. But I’m afraid that your pain and that of Senex shall only be added to after tonight.

Some interesting comments by Sheens claiming it is just another game that suggest the Tigers are feeling a little nervous. Maybe more so that Mateo has been named on the extended bench.

And comments about the ref in early? Of dear, an excuse at the ready?

It shall be a great game.

    Wests/Balmain

What is it about the Tigers signing up a Pommy you can hardly understand, and finals football? Lee Crooks, Andy Courier, Garry Scholfield, Ellery Hanley, and now ..Gareth Ellis. It makes no bloody sense, but how can you argue? Bad news for the Tigers though is they all lost at the last hurdle.

    Brisbane

As bad as Penrith’s defence has seemed this year, they have only conceded 25+ to 6 teams this year (Dragons – twice, Broncos – twice, Bulldogs, Parra, Souths, and NZ). No, I haven’t got the games mixed up – just keep reading

Of interest here, twice now, the week after St George put 25 on Penrith, “they lose”. The first time Brisbane put 25+ on the Panthers this year, “they won”. We all know that the Broncos put another 25+ on the P.P’s last week, so looking at my compass, it seems to be unwaiveringly magnetised northward. If the Broncos can pull off what most would say is an unlikely win at WIN – I will declare: “Stat of The Year”

    Newcastle

Both these teams have been hard to catch lately. A short week for the home team won’t help, but then they seem to have played their best this year, when they have been up against it.

    Penrith

4 hour video session this week watching the last game against Souths. Should make this one a lot closer, and voters now show a marginal swing to the home side. Souths with a few injuries, and Penrith surprisingly fit at this time of year (This is mostly due to excessive defending and chasing of opposition)

    Canberra

Agreed. Motivation for typing about this one is low. Raiders coach has taken advantage of the team’s low intelligence quotients by telling them they can still make the 8. They are certainly playing like they can. Does anyone have the heart to tell them that they can’t?

    Gold Coast

Hard to go past the Coast here – although they are the Sure Thing – so don’t go putting the house on them. You may finish the weekend homeless.

    Melbourne

40-0 still cuts deep. The first ’08 rematch played in Melbourne territory will have the crowd baying, or moo-ing, or whatever they do down there when they’re angry!

    Canterbury

I think the Sure Thing was the Roosters only chance here, but that didn’t come. Bulldogs in their own laboratory, and to experiment away. Who’d want to be a guinea pig here?

Done MB though you had the same comment in the spam filter which was strange.

Very tempted to change your first tip but that would be an abuse power. A Tigers fan may stoop to such tactics but I am above that sort of thing.

How I’ve learnt to hate living in country NSW yet having WIN as a regional affiliate of 9. This means we get the irrelevant Dragons, Broncos game first instead of the game that actually means something on the NRL ladder.

Truthfully, the overall refereeing the last 2 years has been shocking, you need look no further than Archer’s performance in Game 2 of State of Origin last year. Then again they said Bill Harrigan was a great referee and he was shocking. I’m always tempted to get a job refereeing since referees appear to be unaccountable.

My tips are the same as Shaun’s except Tigers over Eels and Panthers over Rabbitohs.

Bismark and I are old friends. So much so that because of him, Souths and Tigers are my second teams (I can’t split them). Of course when they play the Eels, I have no second teams.

But I do feel for my good mate. That was one of the games of the season and a draw may have been a fair result. More than worthy of the crowd of almost 35,000. Hayne and Marshall were both at their best. The forwards bashed each other all night. It doesn’t get much better folks!

And Hayne deservedly got MOM but there was another player that other teams, if watching, will be worried about. Feleti Mateo. He didn’t play much but his skills haven’t suffered after such a long break. He had a big hand in two of the late second half tries.

But credit to the Tigers. They were dangerous all night. Goal kicking was the difference which reflected how close the game was in the end.

I hope the Tigers can still go on to the finals. The Eel are the fortunate as now their destiny is in their hands.

    Mountain Boy // Aug 22, 2009 at 12:16 am

Stat of the year – Dragons twice score 25+ on Penrith then lose the following game both times. Broncos score 25+ on Penrith twice then win then following game both times.

TMG – The Mighty Dragons – not looking so mighty. Could they lose the minor premiership from here? Mathematically they can still finish as low as 3rd !!

    C’mon P.P’s.
Would love to see them get the 2 points this week then go to O’Connell Street – both teams locked on 27 points.

Bulldogs have a good chance of being equal points at the end of the round.

The Parra v Dragons game has just become a VIM!

    Mountain Boy // Aug 22, 2009 at 12:36 am

At best we were thinking Parra was playing the Dragons in round 26 to get a ding-ding round two – 1st v 8th. Now it could be ding-ding round two – 3rd v 6th!!
If that were to happen, well, yes it would be – “Hllettt’s get ready to Rrrummbbbbbllllee !!!”

    Senex // Aug 22, 2009 at 11:33 am

Ultimately it was the goal kicking and some poor last tackle options from the Tigers that cost them the game.

It was a tight game, even with all the injuries. Well played Shaun.

  • Gravatar

    Bismark O'Measles // Aug 22, 2009 at 12:20 pm

Too much running on 5 and not much in the way of kicking whether it be for goal or to pop it into the in-goal.

And…. here we go…. the ref didn’t help! Benji’s pass 7 minutes out was nowhere near forward but would almost have certainly landed them another try. There you go Shaun, that’s all I’ll say.

Oddly enough, I stopped getting texts from you about 15 minutes from the end although I still sent a few… I was driving young Gnasher to his ballet class this morning and 8 texts came in at once !

I’m also pissed off cos I lost a scarf to Shaun and a $15 multi on the Bunnies and Tigers which would have netter me around $130.!

    Shaun // Aug 22, 2009 at 10:32 pm

Well done Panthers. It sets up a mighty showdown next week. But Souths, why couldn’t you score another try and make the margin 24 points? That would have kept the Eels above the Panthers.

And with the Knights great comeback in the second half, they also jump Parra.

    Come on Storm!

And farewell Souths and Cowboys for 2009.

  • Gravatar

    Mountain Boy // Aug 23, 2009 at 4:44 am

A Storm win would put a home final out of reach for Penrith or Parra. A Manly win – although dropping Penrith and Parra to 8th and 9th would still have them in reach of 4th!! Whether they meet next week to push for a top4 place or just a finals place, it will be a big one. I’m happy for Manly to win, and still have a dice-roll at top4 for the winner next weekend, coming into the last round.

The Panthers were written- off out of experts finals calculations some weeks ago, yet still they produce to stay in the hunt. Not at all the dominant team as in ’03 but the media opinion of them is a mirror-image. Still far too early to even dare to dream, but I know, if anything, the distinct lack of media hype will only assist. Conversely, too much hype will cruel some other teams through September.

The welt-marks left from the wooden spoon of ’07 (hauntingly a mirror-image of ’01 spoon) will also be with them as a reminder of how far they’ve come in a short time.

As I say, too early to dream, but there’s still hope.
Remember – Without hope … well, there’s no hope.

One of my Bunnies shirts says ‘Never Say Die’ which sums up the Rabbitohs.

Three weeks ago I would have sworn they were finals contenders and now they’re well and truly dead. Doesn’t help that they’ve lost Tulanawa, Wing, Crocker, Asotasi and Champion… ho hum.

I’ll be missing this afternoons clash between the Storm and Manly (Gnasher’s dancing in Thumbellina for the Sydney City Youth Ballet this arvo) but will be a Southerner for the day keeping the Eels in the 8 and the Tigers at 9 with still a slim chance.

Anyhow, how wrong could I have been in my tips !??! Not a single p0int so far !

If Manly win – the middle 8 will look like this :

    5. Sea Eagles
    6. Knights
    7. Broncos
    8. Panthers
    9. Eels
    10. Tigers
    11. Cows
    12.Rabbits

    Stupid game football.

    Damn those Sea Eagles.

Horror week for my tipping and for the fortunes of my favourite clubs.

Bunnies and Cowboys are now gone – Tigers and Eels have to win and I can’t help feeling the poor old Tiges are gone – they’ve got the Titans and the Dogs – similar task for the Eels – they’ve got the Dragons and Penrith – this is a cruel sport.

Who cares about Monday nights game. Dragons or Dogs, makes no diff to me.

I think the Storm will keep fourth spot. They only have the Roosters and the Warriors to face.

But I don’t think the Storm will go far this year. I heard Warren Ryan make some sage comments about their lack of creative ability in attack. Also the Storm’s grinding play wears the team down.

As for next Friday, he did have some comments on that game. We’ll see if he (and me) are correct.

Btw, Panthers have been making comments to the effect of “Bring it on” in regards to the Eels.

    Don’t worry. We’ll be there.

Friday night footy. A sell out crowd. Another great game.

    Mountain Boy // Aug 23, 2009 at 10:05 pm

Here is my take on the race for the 8:
Destiny is still in the hands of the Tigers. If they win two tough games to finish – Gold Coast (away) aiming for a top2, and then Bulldogs also aiming for that top2 (or better) – then they “will” make it in. Not possible for 30 points to miss out.

One win for the Tigers, and they would need at least two of Knights, Eagles, Broncos, Panthers, or Eels to lose 2. The Tigers for/against would probably be better than all of these teams.

Cowboys still a chance but only using a calculator.

For Parra and Penrith, they also will no doubt make it through with two wins.

One win could still make it in for either (or actually both), but other results would have to fall their way.

Incredibly from 8th and 9th spots, a top4 is still a possibility for Parra or Penrith if either can win 2, Storm lose 2, and the Eagles, Knights, and Broncos lose at least 1. Yes, a long shot, I know.

Bottom line: For the winner of Friday night’s Western Derby II, just a smooth 6-iron away from the green, that is September Footy. For the loser, a 3-wood required into a slight head-wind. Still possible, but quite a bit tougher.

Good golfing analogy MB and I agree with your analysis.

What an end to the season – how good is this for the game!!??

We’re seeing record crowds (apart from at Mt Smart) and genuine interest in the press.

We’ve seen herculean efforts from clubs like Manly, Eels and Tigers and quite the opposite from clubs who should know better like the Roosters and Bunnies.

Regardless of who’s in (obviously I’d like to see the Tigers there) it’s going to be a great finals series and bodes great for next year if only we can iron out all the buffoonery (mainly Nate Miles).

I’ll be enjoying the GF in the cane lounge at Tangalooma again this year so won’t be able to make the blog get together but I’ll certainly have a beer in celebration of the informed analysis and downright crap that I enjoy reading so much every week!

Corruptophobia. My fear of corruption in the game. I have been struck down numerous times this year, but most just say it goes with the territory, following Penrith.

I do hope the best teams on the day win in the next 6 weeks, whoever that is, and wish everyone the best whoever you support, and that I can keep my Corruptophobia under control.
I will be happy if my team loses fair & square. I won’t be too happy if they lose unfair & unsquare.
