I’m torn. I want the Rooster’s to avoid the wooden spoon, but I want Wests to get into the top 8? So at the very least, I *need* the Bronco’s to win. Need.

The Dragons weren’t at their best but the Panthers (no try ruling not withstanding) were their own worst enemies.

That tactic if trying to break the Dragons up the middle was wrong. It may have worked last time but the Dragons defence is much better.

And Penrith’s fifth tackle options (and often the ones before it) were woeful. They weren’t that far off the game but ruined some great opportunities by poor options.

Oh, and Jarrod Sammut is indeed someone whose confidence far exceeds his capabilities.

Well done to both teams for not being offside for an entire 80 minutes. An amazing feat. Something you would find impossible at WIN – where the opposition always are. Well done again to Steve Clarke for showing he is the Dragon’s 18th man. What does the word sacked mean these days when it comes to referees – “See you in a fortnight?”

Apart from playing terrible, it’s just detracts from the game when one team never get the calls, and the Dragons always do. Is the rule back in that a player can make a ball dead by having one foot out? Answer- No, unless you wear red and white.

Justin Poore will be lucky to be playing the first week of the finals after that sickening tackle on Elford. Grubs need to be rubbed.

Ah – all off my chest – I feel much better :)

But what about Wendell’s full moon?

I know it scarred Bismark . Nine was almost taken off the air. For those at CUA who had the rear view, well let’s just say that many tried to unsee what had been seen at the many bars at Panthers.

    Counselling is on offer.

    And the refs did nothing!

    Shaun // Aug 8, 2009 at 1:39 pm

And Poore is indeed going to spend a few weeks on the sidelines. That was not a good tackle.

I think Elford got whacked in a heavy tackle first hit up, put on report himself and then got speared by Poore. It was a rough game for him.

Penrith was witness to a rare astrological event this week. A full moon immediatley followed by a lunar eclipse. Those who witnessed the eclipse without shielding their eyes, no doubt, have suffered permanent damage. The cause of the eclipse is still as difficult to explain, as it is to re-account – that night that (aka) The Dell died, and (aka) Sailor Moon was born.

Sadly, I didn’t get round to putting that lazy tenner on the Bunnies either – stay awake Bismark!

Great weekend of footy though, can only be improved by a flogging of the Broncos tomrrow night.

Ah, what a good win. Gus reckoned that for the Eels to be considered a proper finals team we had to win today. Today was the day. No excuses. Well the Eels have Gus 40 good reasons why they should be in the finals.

Believe it or not, the Eels have been quoted at $17 to win the premiership.

It seems that the Eels, Tigers and Panthers are the key to each others final chances.

Eels have the Warriors next week then the Tigers followed by the Panthers.

The main thing is that the top four looks pretty much settled. But only 2 points separate 5 from 11. Interesting times.

Go the Sharkies. I reckon they can humiliate the Broncos tomorrow night.

    Mountain Boy // Aug 10, 2009 at 10:30 am

Highly unlikely, but still possible for the Bulldogs to win the M/P. Dragons with a much better for&against and would have to lose three of Raiders/Broncos/Rabbitohs/Eels compared to four wins for the Bulldogs against Cowboys/Roosters/Warriors/Tigers. 3rd and 4th probably the only move possible in the top4.

What is becoming clear to me though, with so many teams still a chance of making it – is that this will lead to an abmormally high points required. I calculate it will now be either 31 or 32.
For the remaining teams, I believe that only teams that win their last 4 will make it through.

As I have said, this means that those teams will be on quite a roll of maybe 7 or 8 straight once they reach the finals – and I think all top4 teams better watch out come finals week 1.

The Doggies aren’t playing as well as they should be. But being able to scrap and grind out wins is not a bad sign. They should still finish second. The Dragons are looking too good to drop three games before the finals. Stranger things have happened…

The Panthers could have a big impact on the finals make up. They have the Broncos, Souths, Eels and Knights. Those results will be very interesting. I do believe they will lose one of those games. ;-)

    Mountain Boy // Aug 10, 2009 at 2:54 pm

I am scratching to see where they will actually “win” one. My reckoning says they can only allow one loss. My thoughts are that they may lose all 4.

The losses I have seen in the last couple of months for the Panthers sit for the most-part on the shoulders of Luke Walsh, Paul Aiton, and Jarryd Sammut. When all of the good teams revolve their attack around their halfback, hooker, and fullback – all Walsh does for 5 plays out of 6 is hand the ball off to an inside runner, all Aiton does is make a few runs from dummy-half, and the obligitory pass to noone. As for Sammut – well, lets be honest, he’s not up to first grade. First grade fullbacks don’t regularly drop balls and miss tackle after tackle. I think from here on, it needs to be Walsh to say “I will take on the line at every opportunity, and not worry about copping a bit of attention for my trouble. Lets face it, I am not very attractive to begin with, so what am I worried about”.

How they are sitting as high as they are is a mystery. Unfortunately, in all fairness, Penrith are the team that should miss out on the finals. They very much need things to go their way in the next month, but then Friday night was a perfect example of one team that gets all the breaks, and another team that gets the opposite.

  • Gravatar

    Shaun // Aug 11, 2009 at 10:54 am

My theory why some teams get the breaks is that the ones that do play with good discipline and thereby influence the refs’ perceptions of the team.

Refs are human (though some fans will argue the point) and that is something now amount of technology will fix. An aside is that there was a try that the vid ref took forever to rule on. FFS just make a decision after 3-4 viewings. It ruins the game. Having a Watmough or Gallen in your side can be a liability.

Anyway, if a team has ill-discipline (ball handling, penalties etc) then that may subtly influence the ref in terms of what happened. A strip may turn into a dropped ball.

Refs are placed under unfair scrutiny at times. They need to make decisions very quickly in a blur of players action. Increase use of the vid ref is not the answer. It would destroy the game.

If teams want a fair go then they need to play with discipline. They also need to be mentally tough to cope with poor decisions.

There was a Manly knock on on Friday night that was missed by both refs. Souths simply steeled their defense and went back to their task. And they were amply rewarded.

I’ll comment on Inglis this evening. Just when the game is advertising itself in the greatest way another scandal comes along.

    Mountain Boy // Aug 11, 2009 at 4:14 pm

For me, I just wish you could see a game played as the rules say. It’s clear that the Refs don’t know the rules:

3.1.18 Any player who intentionally delays the bringing of the ball into play shall be penalised. (THIS INCLUDES NOT JUST RESTARTS OF PLAY FROM KICK-OFF OR LINE-DROP, OR HOLDING DOWN BY THE TACKLER, BUT ALSO THE GUY FEIGNING BEING PUSHED OVER AS HE GETS UP TO PLAY THE BALL – IS A DELAY OF PLAY)

4.1.2 The referee should allow play to proceed long enough after a knock-on to allow the opposing team the advantage of gaining possession. (HOW OFTEN DOES THE REF BLOW FOR A KNOCK-ON AND THE OPPOSITION ARE JUST ABOUT TO PICK UP THE BALL – NO ADVANTAGE OFFERED)

4.2.3 The direction of a pass is relative to the player making it and not to the actual path relative to the ground (THIS IS NOT JUST A PHYSICS LESSON – ITS IN THE RULES! THE AMOUNT OF FAIR PASSES CALLED BACK IS FRIGHTENING)

5.1.13 The ball must be held horizontally and put into the scrum on the referee’s side by rolling it along the ground between the outside feet of the two prop forwards. The outside feet must also be the forward most foot of the two props.(THIS IS STILL THE RULE!! THERE IS NO RULE THAT SAYS YOU CAN FEED IT BEHIND THE FRONT ROW)

6.1.3 Any player can ask the referee the reason why a penalty has been awarded, provided he/she does so respectfully. (THIS IS A RULE. THE WAY REF’S CARRY ON AFTER A PENALTY AND WAVE PLAYERS AWAY WOULD HAVE YOU THINK THE PLAYER HAS NO RIGHT TO ASK THE QUESTION)

7.3.8 The referee should not disallow a try because he/she was not in a position to see the grounding of the ball. (THIS IS A RULE. DOES THE VIDEO REF KNOW THIS RULE???????)

9.2.3 If a ball, which is stationary in the field of play or in the in-goal area, comes into contact with a player standing in touch, touch-in-goal or over the dead ball line, the ball is made dead by that player. (WENDELL DIDN’T KNOW THIS RULE – BUT NO MATTER – THE REF DIDN’T KNOW IT EITHER)

    18. When the referee makes a decision on matters of fact, he/she shall not change that decision unless prior foul play is brought to his/her attention by a touch judge. (THE WORST RULE OF THE LOT SAYS THAT A REF DOES NOT HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE AN INCORRECT DECISION UNLESS IT’S THE RESULT OF FOUL PLAY. A VIDEO REPLAY OF A REF’S MISTAKE CANNOT BE CORRECTED BY THE REF IF NO FOUL PLAY WAS INVOLVED. IT’S IN THE BLOODY RULES!?)

    Shaun // Aug 12, 2009 at 10:24 am

Good god no. Then it would be like rugby, a game bogged down in the minutiae of rules technicalities.

To be fair, you have a good point with the rule regarding advantage. There have been plenty of times this season when I’ve felt the ref should have let the play continue.

And scrums really need a rethink. I’m sure you suggested a return of contest scrums sometime ago with which I heartily agree.

But the best league refs understand the game needs to flow. Many of the rules are best interpreted in the spirit of the game rather then the letter of the law. That does not mean refs are cheating or a team is gaining an unfair advantage.

As said before, I’m generally happy with the way things are with officialdom. A few tweaks here and there maybe. They make mistakes but have been doing so for 101 years.

It is all part of the rich tapestry that comprises the greatest game of all.

    Mountain Boy // Aug 12, 2009 at 3:11 pm

My point is, I am not aware of another sport on Earth, where the game is not played according to its own rules, apart from our own.

The NRL needs to take a big step back from where it is now, to make Rugby League truly great again.

The most basic fundamental of this game, the contest for the ball, has been lost. The only contests for the ball you see now are from kicks, the odd scramble for a loose ball, and where there is a one-on-one strip. But that’s it.

    so BRING BACK THE SCRUM!!

People are sick of knowing who is going to win the scrum. Remember when you used to get that “buzz” when you saw the ball come out your teams end of the scrum? Even when you had the feed, you still had your fingers crossed until it reappeared. It was great.

I agree with you there MB – scrums put some oomph into the game.

Rothfield is the type of hack that gives hacks a bad name. His ego-driven agenda masks any real understanding of the game. He is just pissed off with the Saints as they would not agree to be interviewed by the News Ltd and so indulges in a petty vendetta.

  • Gravatar

    Mountain Boy // Aug 14, 2009 at 5:42 pm

I also believe the Dragons are getting favours this year – so whatever that makes me is fine. I don’t mind at all if others think differently, as long as it’s still ok to form my own opinion on things.

Rothfield mentioned the double-standard between Soward’s biting non-charge and Gallen’s racial comment charge. In both cases, the victims asked for it to be left on the field. There was damning evidence against Soward, and here, we are talking about the lowest act on a football field. Yet the whole thing hardly got a mention.

The tackle last Friday, to me, needed to punished in order for the tackler to know that this is not part of the game. For the judiciary to believe the sad case that Elford was more to blame, is just a joke. I suppose he turned himself upside down too, and Poore was merely a bystander.

I believe it now makes it impossible for the Dragons to win this year, without the knowledge they have already been given a helping hand along the way.

That’s disappointing because I think they may have won without the help.
