… really, WTF?
You guys get Bassem Abbas back from season-ending injury due to the power of ancient Mesopotamian necromancy*, you’re in Thailand getting ready to restart your stunted qualifying campaign… and this happens.
Basically according to FIFA regs, unilaterally disbanding your FA in the middle of a World Cup qualifying campaign is not on, and if this isn’t amended by Tuesday Iraq will have all its matches forfeited 3-0.
From an Aussie perspective this is just shit news. It’d make qualifying for Stage Four a piece of piss but we joined this confederation precisely because we wanted tough, arduous campaign routes and able opponents, something we’re about to be robbed of.**
Here’s hoping the Iraqi Govt comes to its senses, as disqualification would be a loss for Iraq, Asia and football itself.***
*according to reliable sources no less than the ghoulish Necronomicon of Abdul Alhazred was consulted.
** not to mention cash from attendence at credible fixtures — FFA’s going to be out of pocket by $3m if June 1 at Suncorp is cancelled.
*** I mean that.

Yep. And poor QLDers don’t get a qualifying game to go watch. You’d think the Iraqi govt would have better things to attend to.

If they were invoking the powers of the Necronomicon maybe we should be seeking for someone with a shotgun or chainsaw where their right arm used to be?
