Look. I know I bagged Melbourne a bit last night but it is not a bad old town. Apart from the worshipping of false gods. I’ve found some English Super League on the hotel telly and that is helping to banish the pallor that hangs around my league spirit.
So, what do we have this round? Have a look over the fold.
Melbourne Storm v Manly Sea Eagles, Friday 7:30pm Olympic Park
The grand final rematch nicely sets up round 5. Both teams have been patchy at the start of the season but returned to form in the past few rounds. But Melbourne at home seems an irresistible tip. So I will take but with not a lot of confidence. I’m not convinced by Melbourne this year. I reckon they have come back to the field and won’t have the comp all their own way.
Parramatta Eels v Gold Coast Titans, Friday 7:30pm Parramatta Stadium
The Eels are killing their fans at the moment. If they keep going this way, the torturous journey of hope will be replaced by the numbing relief of despair. The Titans don’t travel well and will miss Luke Bailey. They have a good chance to knock over an out of sorts Eels but this is the game Timmy Smith will come good.
St George Illawarra Dragons v North Queensland Cowboys, Saturday 5:30pm WIN Stadium
Who the hell knows? Sure the Cowboys won last week but can they sustain the momentum? The Dragons need to bounce back from a golden point loss to the Sharks. If the Dragons can contain the Cowboys’ forwards that will deny Thurston the platform to weave his magic. Given the Dragons increasing ability at inconsistency I’m leaning to the North Queenslanders.
Penrith Panthers v Sydney Roosters, Saturday 7:30pm CUA Stadium
The Panthers have hit a little vein of form. Admittedly it was against an injury ridden Tigers but you take ‘em when you can get ‘em. The Roosters are a different proposition. They are playing good, disciplined footy. The Roosters easily.
New Zealand Warriors v Canterbury Bulldogs, Sunday 12:00pm Mt Smart Stadium
If one team is going to rally around their departing coach it is the Bulldogs. Unless they really do hate Folkes’ guts and then may not give a rats. A tough one given the Warriors are usually pretty good at home. The Warriors have the better attacking game and can big bop easily with the Bulldogs attack. So the home team.
Canberra Raiders v West Tigers, Sunday 2:00pm Canberra Stadium
If Robbie Farah plays, then putting him at half will be a mistake. He is not a half and the Tigers will suffer. The Raiders are well in with a chance here. There will be a chill but the depths of winter are still a little away. I like the Raiders in this one. The Tigers are down a bit and ripe for some pillaging.
Newcastle Knights v Brisbane Broncos, Sunday 3:00pm Energy Australia Stadium
Lockyer is out again and that hurts the Broncos. For Knights, Mullen is out which means not match up with Peter Wallace over the NSW origin half positions. But the Knights are at home which makes them quite a tasty tip. The Novacastrians in a thriller.
South Sydney Rabbitohs v Cronulla Sharks, Monday 7:00pm ANZ Atadium
Both teams have problems in attack. This could be a dour game if the Bunnies remember how to defend like they did last year. The Bunnies are not out of this. They are a better team than their form suggests. But form is important so no love for the Bunnies till they show some consistent good form. The Sharks.

Forgot the sure thing and the roughy.the roosters are good value at 1.65 against the panthers. I tipped the knights but they are also the roughy.

I agree with everything said, except i believe the broncos will bounce back after last weeks game. They were outplayed by the storm in a hard fought match but still didn’t play bad. They have been performing well all year and i think they’ll get the points against the Knights who have been travelling along well, but won’t have enough in this game especially with Mullen out.

Yeah I agree with Josh 100%.With mullen out I believe the broncos will get over the knights.Without mullen they’ll lose alot of attacking flare and the broncos are one of the best defending teams in the NRL and I dont believe that the knights will put enough points of the board to over come the broncos even with lockyer out.

Consolation in the Roosters got me some money tonight.
3/4 for the weekend. Tomorrow, league from 12:00pm to 6:00pm if you have Foxtel and then switch to Nine. What better way to spend a sundee?

Ahh bugger. The Broncs and the Roosters are the early pace setters. The question is will they last till August?
5/7. Thought it was only going to be 4 from 7 til Todd Carney’s runaway try 10 minutes from full time against the Tigers.

Bum Bum Bum
There goes the last of my upset tips this week - but look Shaunie… was it aflogging - assuredly not.
At no time does your previous post apply… I wasn’t there (Desmond O’Measle’s 14th birthday) but fully sympathise with yer average stand-fan who sat through an entire second half holding the Sharks scoreless and posting the only points … hope - only to be disppointed as only a Bunny can be.
I wonder what Steve Folkes is doing next year?! (remove whip from (mmmmm) leather case and start self-flagellating)
..help.

Oh the agony. Souths had plenty of possession to beat the Sharks. But you could tell that once they got close to the Shark’s goal line, they had no idea how to score a try. Gonna be a long season.
And the Sharks attack was not much better. Kimmorely and Bird have no attacking moves at all.
