The first Australian football team to make it to a World Cup quarter finals takes on Brazil in just under half an hour. I haven’t been following the Matildas closely, but from what I saw in the Ghana match and the highlights of Canada game they could teach Sydney FC a few A-League teams a fair bit about taking on your opponent’s back line, holding on to posession and challenging for the ball.
That said this looks like a tough match. Brazil romped through their group in a goalfest (which makes an interesting contrast to the men’s team in this years Copa America), here’s hoping our sheilas can cut it where the blokes failed last year.

I’m so glad its on SBS. Three cheers SBS. Watching now, Brazil 1-0 and it does seem the Matildas are a bit nervous and Brazil is way classy. Its not as technically proficient as the men’s game to be sure, but that actually creates a much more open and free flowing game that’s extremely entertaining to watch. And this team is at best semi-professional and they give up careers and security to play for the team, and yet there’s an amazing lack of “we didn’t know it would be hot in Asia”, “we didn’t know the opposition would be good” and “some of us don’t want to be here” excuses.

It has. Gutsy stuff — we really put Brazil off their pace for much of the second half and it took a brilliant goal to knock us out.

And don’t forget the penalty (outside the box, could have gone our way on another occasion.)
Brazil are a cut above but we’re not that far behind.

Definately, and higher than their male counterparts relative to their milieu — though who knows what would have happened in Germany 2006 if we hadn’t had Merk the Jerk penalising us for breathing near those fragile Brazillians…
