AFL Round 3 (where Five’s tipping goes to shit)

April 15th, 2007 by Five · 2 Comments

If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s losing to Carlton. As Real Footy puts it:

It might sound a little trite to say there’s something about the sight of an Essendon jumper that brings the very best out of Carlton, but after one of the best wins in the Blues’ history yesterday, it’s simply an undeniable truth.

Bloody Blues were 48 points behind at half time, but then came back to win 125 to 122. Bastards. I have fallen way down the tipping ladder, as have the Bombers. At this stage it would seem I am losing the battle against the punters. I only got three, compared to the punters six. That makes 11 for me, Mug Tipster, and 16 for the punters. I’m a shit tipster, but you’d have to say that 16 is pretty good.

The Blues win was against the beliefs of punters, as were the wins by the Crows and Saints. Unfortunately I backed the same teams. My wins were with the Maggies, the Cats and the Swans (just like the Punters). But the punters liked the Eagles and the Hawks, and I chose the dreary Dockers and the Roos, so I got just three.

(80%) Magpies (17.13 115) Tigers (13.12 90) (20%)
(17%) Blues (18.17 125) Bombers (17.20 122) (83%)
(56%) Power (7.11 53) Crows (10.7 67) (43%)
(47%) Saints (17.14 116) Bulldogs (9.12 66) (53%)
(26%) Dockers (11.4 70) Eagles (14.17 101) (73%)
(79%) Swans (96) Lions (69) (21%)
(18%) Demons (8.9.57) Cats (15.19.109) (82%)
(41%) Kangaroos (10.10 70) Hawks (13.13 91) (58%)

I guess the real story is that neither Essendon or Carlton are anywhere near the bottom of the ladder, which is a marked change from last year. But the grand losers from last week are still the grand losers this week – that’s the Roos, the Dockers, the Demons and the poor sad Tigers. West Coast remain undefeated and top the ladder. The rest is a moveable feast of two out of three.

And this week I saw a brief snatch of St Kilda versus the Doggies, and being completely and utterly in command. Long may they reign! Although I love the Dogs, so was torn.

[...] Tony the Teacher, meanwhile, contributes a wonderful neologism to the cricket tragic’s vocabulary – disminnowing! Five – on the Greatest Game – discovers that her AFL tipping has gone up the spout (was it to do with that Essendon jumper I wonder?) and – also at Sidelined – Phil has a great post on Stuart O’Grady’s win in the Paris-Roubaix. I notice that the compiler of Missing Link could not resist HAVING A GO AT MY EXPENSE.

Carlton fan, eh? I know, many people hate Essendon, but that’s because we are ace.

    As you were.
