Farewell Grasshopper

February 9th, 2007 by Shaun · No Comments

The parochial polarisation of State of Origin has produced many a character over the years and not just the players. League fans of a certain vintage and beyond will remember well State of Origin referee Barry Gomersall, also know as ‘The Grasshopper’ who passed away today at the age of 61.

Growing up in NSW, steeped in Origin lore, Gomersall was just a hated as Wally Lewis. But the dust from those battles settled long ago and the truth is Gomersall was a great referee and character who helped with the legend of Origin. Many will remember Gomersall’s habit ignoring players who went the biff leading to the strange spectacle of most players furiously trading blows while Gomersall followed the two or three still playing footy.

The Grasshopper will be deservedly remembered for his contribution to the game and one of the few referees that could be called a ‘legend.’ League fans no matter where they are in relation to the NSW/QLD border will be saddened by his passing.
