A-League Wrap after the first week of the semi-finals

January 29th, 2007 by Shaun · 3 Comments

Sydney FC 2 – Newcastle Jets 1

Adelaide United 0 – Melbourne Victory 0

The Adelaide v Melbourne game hasn’t cleared up much though as I understand the rules, Adelaide has a slight advantage on the away goal rule.

Newcastle would need to win at least 2 – 0 or 3 – 1 to overcome Sydney though they are at home (please correct me if I am wrong – I am a novice to such finals shenanigans).

Newy can beat SFC 1-0 and make it, as the away goal will count for double, but if SFC get a draw of any kind the Jets are crashed. If sydney go one goal up Newcastle have to bang in three to go through and if it’s 2-1 in Newcastle’s favour they go to extra time and then penalties.

    Got it?

As for the match itself, I covered it at my suddenly restarted blog. Sydney were outstanding in the first half, but Terry McFlynn, one of our crucial defensive midfielders got a groin injury in injury time, which left Nick Carle free to wreak havoc in tandem with Rodriguez who came on about an hour in and scored the vital away goal ten minutes later. Thanks to shambolic recruitment in the offseason our bench has been poor all season and Friday night was no exception – with a DM taken out, all Butcher had to replace him were strikers, a shoddy state of affairs.

Next match should be gripping, with Ufuk Talay (another DM) back from suspension and Ceccoli back in left wingback. Although Talay isn’t as rugged as McFlynn and won’t be able to check Carle as easily, if he’s paired with Milligan they might be able to put something great together given Talay’s solid distributive skills. Although the Jets haven’t been able to beat Sydney all season, they’ve managed to claw their way into draws and put us under enermous pressure – wether that’ll be enough this weekend is anyone’s guess.

And on the other match: Ta-ta Melbourne, you’ve done wonders for football in Victoria, but all those gruelling pre-season camps have finally taken their toll. There is such as thing as too much of a good thing.

Thanks Leinad. 1-0, I’m getting there.
